My phone carrier (Koodo) recently had a promotion that had my same plan ($55 /mo for unlimited Canada Wide minutes and 10GB of data) on sale for $50 /mo, a savings of $5 /mo or $60 /year.

Early black friday deals rolls around and they've sweetened the pot by making that same plan now 12GB /mo.

I was able to switch to the black friday deal and now I have more data for less money per month! :)

Usually those types of deals apply to [*]new customers only.
Were you able to do the switch your self, online? Or.. did you
need to involve a person at Koodo?

I remember the television advertisements for Koodo. Didn't know they were still around.

Yup, was able to do it myself. Just logged into self serve choose switch plan and look at the available options. In my case there were two, the black friday $50 12GB plan or a regular $60 15GB plan.

Koodo is just a flanker brand of Telus. Canada only has three major wireless cell phone carriers.

Bell, Rogers and Telus each own "flanker" brands to appeal to different market segments and to create the illusion of competition.

    Rogers: Fido & Chatr
    Telus: Koodo & Public Mobile
    Bell: Virgin & Lucky Mobile

Whenever a fourth carrier tries to enter the space they get swallowed by one of the big three. Wind mobile tried to become a fourth national carrier & had marginal success. When their ownership came into question (as telecommunications companies need to be majority Canadian owned) they were sold to Shaw who is now trying to be swallowed by Rogers.

Just a different way of saying:

Activate in-store or over the phone and pay a $50 activation/connection fee.
Do it yourself online and save $50.

I've never understood the concept of an activation fee. It just discourages people from signing up. Want the privileged of being our customer and paying us a monthly bill? That'll be $50.

    But BOTH lines say "online".

    $50 = "shop online"
    $0 = "order online"

Where do you get "instore" from that?

Agreed. That's the first thing that resonates in my soul when I
notice an activation fee - it just makes me shudder and look
    away.

    - $0 connection fee when you order online!

I just went to the Koodo site myself and see the same three strings:

    https://ibb.co/ynfmtrT

Keep in mind Koodo has "Shock-Free data" which means they'll automatically turn off your data at the end of your allotment, it's not unlimited at reduced speeds like some of the other companies offer.

I thought all the providers provided throttle-down unlimited.

Getting cut off would seem to be the antithesis of "shock-free
data" to me. That is, suddenly having no data would be a shock!

For me $40/mo is enough for this overpriced thing. Jumping
onto the Koodo deal would mean $120 MORE per year - no thanks.
