I'm not 100% sure on the very first website I went to, but one of the first was www.nintendo.com. Back then they had a "Nintendo Chat" thing right on their front page.

It wasn't anything fancy, it just added to a running text file displayed
on the page. But I remember everyone was asking where everyone else was from and most of the people were from North America, but there were a few from Europe and Australia on there too. That was one of the first times I felt
the excitement of the internet & how it could connect us all.

For me.. the first sense that anything connected people, was
echomail. Back then, even accessing the internet required
dialup. So, connecting to a BBS .vs. an ISP to browse or
gopher made no difference. The "internet" itself wasn't
    amazing to me.

Compuserve was another a-ha place for me; getting connected
with people who had info to share or just enjoyed a good
    conversation.

Compuserve was a great place too. I hung out there sometimes.
