Yeah; but the standard now (I know--can't fairly judge the past by the filters of today) is to give the inventor credit, but to own(& license or sell by your own choice) the patents.

    Yep, common practice now.
I think it started when the inventor didn't have the means or ability to
mass produce whatever he invented and sold the patent rights to someone who could, but he retained a certain percentage of the profits of whatever.

I have nothing but respect for this man -- the first I've ever had real respect for. & the only person I've ever called sir and mister & sincerely meant the honour. (a mister was just a master(employer)

In the South we were taught call others Mr and Mrs/Miss, until they gave permission to call them by their first name.
And the same goes for sir/ma'am.
Sir/ma'am rolls off my tongue easily and naturally.
I have met young folks, usually Yankee's, who refuse to call someone with that respect and call the others by their first names, whether they know
them or not. Sadly many Southerners are this way now.
And then, being a Southern gentleman, there is the honouric Mr/Miss with
a first name, Mr Jack/Miss Mary. Those are used for superiors of some sort.
And when Miss evolved to MS that was easy since Miss was often slurred
    as Miz. :)

He also promised an ear in every home & a camera on every corner -- with the newer Windows that's been done, too.

    Like Big Brother in "1984".

Now, the sharks on Shark Tank advocate licensing use of a patented product.

I've seesn the same advice for other IP, like copywrited materials. (now the trend is for NFTs)

Sir/ma'am rolls off my tongue easily and naturally.

I've hung out with enough Southerners I've picked up on it, too, & I like it, as it's an equality thing -- everyone uses the honorific, same as in Japan -- they had -san suffix to anyone's name, front lasdt, or even a nickname.

Gaijin means "round-eye" is refers to us westerners -- it can be pejorative, but they'll even call you Gaijin-san (basically, 'You ain't from here, but I'll still call you 'sir')

I have met young folks, usually Yankee's, who refuse to call someone with that respect and call the others by their first names, whether they know
them or not. Sadly many Southerners are this way now.

As to the Yankees -- they need to pay attention to the ways of the Romans, if they wish to visit Rome. . . :)

I used to talk to several men & women in the South, as par t of my job, & I liked being greeted as "sir" by men & women, young & old, CEOs & CSRs all the same. . . that helped me pick up on it, too -- it's automatic now, if I hear a southern accent, I call them Sir or Ma'am.

Sucks that some women are taking attitude at being called "Maam, or Mrs."

"Calling me Ma'am makes it sound like I'm old!" "Do NOT define me by my marital status!"

I use Ms. in formal settings -- to me Ms. is like Mr. -- an abbreviation encapsulating both the minor(unmarried) & the adult (Master/Mister, Miss/Missus)

I write Ms. with the period, even though the Femdoms demand it not have one.

Too bad, she-dog, you said you wanted equality with "Mr."; well, you've got it!

I see this in old movies with the house Negro using such addresses.

I prefer being just "George" but I understand parents wanting to teach their minor children to use Mr., so I ask to be called "Mr. George" so they get the right practice & I know I'm being addressed, too.

That's a combo French thing & database user thing -- I use xxx.xxx.xxxx so I don't need to prefix the nunber with ' to keep Excel from doing a calculation.

Then I edit to use hyphens when posting in the header of a fax or body of an ejmail -- for maximum universal recognition.

It's my fault, IMO, if my business communications are misunderstood.

The Ms (no period is a holdover of some older women believing the term was invented as a neolgism to avoid defining a womam by her marital status or age; that may well have been the original intent -- I choose to see it as being equivalent to Mr. (combines Master(child) & Mister(married/adult))

Could it be only the Southern Baptists have had it right all along? HORRORS!! *G*

Best line I heard was a British comic who said, "I am not speaking with an accent; this is just how English sounds when pronounced correctly."

100%. I giveit freely to other humans, but if they're otherwisem Ui casngive bacjk as good as I get. . .(I'm from Mission -- training grounds for the perfect instant comebacks)

whether black or white, called him Mr Pete.
(While a supervisor he often got his hands dirty with us. That helped

Yup; I have much respect for supers & managers who take up the job as needed to ensure customers are being served to high standards.

I don't care if you're unionized or not -- get in there & help.

I don't care, too, if you're at a higher or lower rank or pay -- if I can chip in, I do.

I draw the line at those who deliberately shjirtk expecting me to take up the slack. For them, I'm not getting paid for two jobs, so no.

Generally I try to point them towards some thing else useful while I take over that which is most time sensitive or otherwise critical. They feel they've stuck me with it, so don't feel resentful that I might've blatantluy pulled rank where I had none. Not my job, except in the sense my main job is to do what I can to ensure the company serves its customers & meets its bottom-line needs as best as possible.

I read once someone said something to the extent "'1984' is a warning,
not a blueprint". I mangled that in the translation I know.

    Sounds fair as is. :)

Except some seem determined to use it as a blueprint, so the rest of us had best take warning, I'd say. . .

It's helped ID some obvious BS being done to us over the years since it was printed in '49. . .

I read his other big one, Animal Farm, & found it just as insightyful -- this one was written as a similitude about a real-life event (the Soviet Russian Revolution) but it really is a blueprint & warning for any sort of revolution.

Yes, there will rise up those who seem to be yopur friends, & yes, they will end up being nearly indistinguishable from the masters they supposedly freed you from.

Like here in BC, where, as part of Canada, we're basically gun-free, there are militias stockpiling arms & ammo, while training. . .

They'll be the ones to rise up when the government oversteps its legal boundaries, but I dont fool myself into thinking they'll always, if ever, be altruistic saviours.

That's something I should try with the phone number when I
    create invoices in Excel. xxx.xxx.xxxx

If you think of it when creating it, you can define a column as phone number, & it'll format anything you put in there that's not xxx-xxx-xxxx (or "(xxx)" for the first 3)

I generally don't, as I'm putting in a lot of overseas numbers; most are xxx- xxxx-xxxx, but not all; I tend to format so country & city code form the first block (612 for northern Australia, e.g.) & have no idea how they natively formsat their numbers, when writing for international callers.

Like mine is country code of 1, followed by area code(778), exchange(882) & phone number "POPE"

So I write it, for non-USA foreigners:
    +1-778-882-7673
(I used to put "POPE" for the last 4,. but nobody has those phones with the alphabet on the keys any more (I've got it memorized, so don't need it; if I ever forget it, I know how to use Google)

When I was a grade school age, I really enjoyed receiving
personal letters addressed to me as Esq.

Was it to "Master August Abolines, Esq."?

I had the "Master"(spelled out, to differentiate from Mr. George Pope(my dad)) but no esq; I always thought esquire was for educated(university grad or Masters) folk alone.

Ny strict definition, that's not necessary to validly use it, so I occasionally might tack it onto my name in especially formal communications where I don't mind an assumption being made that I'm a lawyer.

Life's short (or is it? It's the longest thing any of us will ever
    experience, barring metaphysical afterlife theories, of course);
That's pretty good! (and funny). I'll have to remember that

"I went to the zoo the other day, but all I saw was a dog in a
cage. It was a shih tzu."

One of my faves that shih tzu one. . .

People get freaked out over saying that breed's name -- it's shih-tzu -- exactly as written & properly pronounced! They knmow they can't pronounce tz as a starter sound, so they adjust the entire phrase to suit them.

I can teach anyone to say that right -- just say cats...soup & drop the ca & op

Just like I can teach Newfie on one card:

    WHALE
    OIL
    BEEF
    HOOKED

Say that as often as you need to get the accent into your mouth, then start calling everyone buddy ("Buddy was filling my gas tank & 'accidentally' went over the 30L limit by $1, so I tipped it to him & another as thanks" Nah, Newfies don't tip. . *LOL*)

I can get along anywhere I might suddenly wind up, unless it's a culture firmly against cripples, then I'll beef hooked for sure!

In any major city, there'll be a small core of English speakers somewhere, & I'll find them.

Easy to find a major city -- follow any stream orcreek(or crick) downstream til it hits a river, then follow that downstream to a port city near the mouth.-

Like one visiting speaker said at Missionsfest about 25 years ago, "You don't necessarily have to be Baptist to get to Heaven, but why on Earth would you take any chances?"

    Like the old joke.
A man dies and is being given a tour of heaven and sees all sorts of wonderful things.
Then the man and guide come to a tall wall that goes on an on.
The man asks what the wall is for and the guide replies: "Oh, on the

I read that many years ago. I should re-read it, along with Brave New
    World.

Like here in BC, where, as part of Canada, we're basically gun-free

I have never understood gun free zones.
I suppose to some people it gives a sense of security but it also tells
the bad guy that is open territory.
I have never heard of some bad guy changing his mind seeing a gun free
zone sign and going elsewhere to do whatever he was going to do.
WV is a conceal carry state and some bad guy doesn't know if he his prey
    is armed or not.
Our violent crime rate is relatively low. We have B&E's, etc but the guy breaking into the house doesn't if the place is protected by a scared person curled up in a fetal position in the corner or meeting them with a gun.
    Like the old joke.
A Texan is pulled over in a northern state for speeding.
The trooper sees a loaded handgun on the passenger seat and asks if he
    has a permit for it.
The Texan replies he does and produces the paperwork.
The trooper asks if he has any others and the Texan pulls out a couple
more from the glove box, and shows the troopers rifles and shotguns in the trunk.
The trooper asks what the Texan is afraid of and he replies "Not a danged thing son, not a danged thing".
Switzerland doesn't have a standing army, but all able bodied men are
members of the militia and issued weapons which they keep at home. Since every home has weapons, the crime rate there is very low.

That's the ony kind of supervisor or manager I have any respect for -- the micromamagers are just jackasses with a title!

I also believe in training and equipping a person to do the job and let

Micromanaging is one of my not so 'pet' peeves. . .

I was hired to do my job because I was adjudged the best of the batch, & here I am trying to prove them justified, & I don't need anyone second-guessing me or otherwise slowing me down.

I get some times the gigher ups hire someone from outside to come in as a middle manager -- I get that they want am audit type fresh look at things, but the smart new guy ASKS me what's being done, instead of coming out shooting with HOW things must be done now.

Hads one like that who got the senior guiy fired for not listening to her diredftive to answerttyhe phones in a certain way, when he'd been doing it well enough for 6 years in a way he found well, & his clients & other contacts had no issue with.

I was told, by the owner, upon startying, to answer anty rrespectful way I feelmodst comfortable doing, & I had been doingh so fr several years, but I switched on her demand because I wasn't married to my way -- it was convenient, but I'm on the clock -- I can do anything you want, dear. . .

She's long gone, but I'm still here doing my thing. . . If I felty switching would interfere with my mandate, given by the owner(final authority) , to take care of his customers, or she'd've been gone earlier & the other guy'd still be with us (he got us plenty of new business in Latin America including a long- running exclusive deal with Chile)

I'm sure my boss felt his being fired was wrong, but he's old school & believes when you put someone in a position of authority, you do not override their decisions. I fully concur. If needed, I'll change their job, but never overrule their decisions made under their prior authority.

If someone isn't working out in whatever job then find someone who is
able and willing to do it and find a more suitable job for the first person.

True that. . . everyone is replaceable & the more they think they aren't, the more it's time to look into it. . .

I read his other big one, Animal Farm, & found it just as insightyful
I read that many years ago. I should re-read it, along with Brave New
    World.

I've yet to read Brave New World --I might now that I can get it from Z-Lib & put it on my phone to read when I'm out. . .

Since ever
home has weapons, the crime rate there is very low.

I'm with you, but Canada has this Liberal-led disarming tradition going strong now.

I'm all about RESPONSIBLE ownership. We do allow peope to have guns, if they go through training & pass the tests, including ensuring the gun cannot be taken & used by anyone else.

& regular training/practice to maintain one's license, I'm fine with. (in your 2A context, "as part of a well-ordered militia")

I think it's easy enough to ensure legal guns aren't fed into the illegal side of things. . .

Every gun must be test-fired & the ballistics data (striations & pin markings) be logged 8into a federal police database.

If your gun is used in a crime, as proved by the ballistics, then you're held partly responsible for the crime, as a co-accused.

This would do a lot to stop the old "Oh, yes, I had that gun, but it was stolen" excuses. . .

& if you sell it, you only can sell it to someone else responsible who then registers as the owner. No more black market market. . .

I fully agree with your points about how the possibility of dying for a break- in suddenly makes it not as worthy it, as a risk of prison(play time for some) time might be fine om the cost benefit analysis done by a slightly addled brain
    & personality.

I was a punk juvenile delinquent -- I know I'd've had a lot more respect for people & therir stuff if the potential of deadly force used to defend their stuff was a factor (I never did crimes against persons -- only property stuff)

You gave the example of Switzerland -- Israel, too -- every adult is trained in the use of arms & most walk around with an Uzi at the ready, & are fully trained in how to use it.

Rape is pu't near xero there, because that hot chick you approach at night is likely well-armed, & may even know Krav Maga, & if you lay a hand on her, the odds are strong that you WILL die!

    Respect.

Here in Canada we have the insane situartion, truestory, of a guy who was threatened with death by a local gang -- reported it to police, who could "do nothing, without an actual incident."

So the ghang shjows up at his plazce, sarmed & ready tyo kill him.

He came outside with a shotgun, & fired once into the air to let them know he was armed & ready to use it to defend himself (they'd already fired multiple rounds into his home)

HE was charged with the illegal discharge of a firearm. I'm, "Hey, he had justification to kill as many people as entered his property, yet all he did was fire into the air -- utterly harmless to one & all."

I guess the shotgun was louder than theiur sjmall arms fuire, & a neighbour called the cops whose sirens caused the gang to scatter. He, having done nothing wqrong, as far as he knew, was waiting for the cops, with the gun already put down & out of sight. (no sense spooking armed cops)

He explained what happened, then they put the cuffs on him!

    HOLY FLEEPING CRAP!!!

I've actually had more than one cop tell me that if someone breaks into my house at night, & I intend to do anything about, be sure my response is deadly, so tyhere's only one witness(me), & any good cop'll help me write up the report, "You say it was dark, & ikt looked like he was reaching for a gun, so you hit him with the vase to try to simply STOP him?" (Oh, yes, sir, that's exactly what happened; I didn't mean to kill anyone, I just wanted to STOP(key keyword) him from killing ME or my family)

I don't own a gun, & am fine without one -- I know how to avoid trouble, which accordiung to an 8th dan black belt acquauintance of mine, is the most important rule for successful self defence, that he wouldn't go to certain areas or places, especially at night, even with his skills.

Works for me & I know his second rule well, too -- use the power of clever conversation to steer trouble away, if accosted in spite of best practices to avoid such.

Like an old('70s) song put it: I hollered out so all could hear, "He voted for McGovern & he's also queer!" (in a southern Honky Tonk, where they were going to beat him up for being a hippie) "I was sent by the brothers to ferret him out before he ratted us all out to the feds."

(I paraphrase as best as I recall, but that was the gist -- think & talk fast, then run at the first opportunity, in the confusion)

Exceptoins to every rule, including the one about nobody is indispensible.

You're something nobody wants to keep or pay for any more: someone with years of solid hands-on experience.

Sad. . . I'll take one of you over random 10 guys who together cost less than you deserve. (value to the company should be the only metric used to assign pay rate, not years around)

My boss feels the same & regularly offers me raises. (He's wise enough to know if I'm worth more than I'm getting, eventually,Icould be lured away by someone willing to pay full price, then I'm working for his competition)

I was warned right off that this field doesn't lead to big paycheques, so I tend to be a rainmaker, to ensure there's new revenue rolling in, so those spontaneous increases keep coming. . .

One year, it was funny -- the city workers were on strike for 6 weeks (no pay comingv in) then settled for a 5% raise split up over the next 3 years. I had just got, about that time, a 10% raise all at once, & a 20% one just before the strike!

I guess I'd modify my previous statement about irreplaceability with "have an accurate understanding of your overall value to the company's owner(s) & aim for higher."

I'm with you, but Canada has this Liberal-led disarming tradition going
    strong now.
I like the bumper sticker: When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

or: "When marriage is outlawed, only outlaws will have inlaws."

I think it's easy enough to ensure legal guns aren't fed into the illegal
    side of things. . .
That isn't always possible, just as keeping anything from being stolen.

My method would ensure every gun made would be on file, with the unique pin marks & barrel striations in a central law enforcemnent database.

If it is used in a crime, track the last owner & either connect them to the crime as prime suspect, or tag them as an accessory.

This should change the paradigm out there drastically, scaring off some who shouldn't have a gun (the 2nd A is clear: "part of a well-ordered militia" -- that means regular training & practice. Obviously past military or police trauining counts for something, too, especially, as you can technically be called back to duty any time once discharged.

Foir me, if I was American, I'd want my country, neighbourhood & family to be as safe as possible & the current 2nd A mess isn't achieving that to the sense that Tommy Jefferson intended.

The guy(or gal, or minor) who is well-trained & practiced, is not the problem.

"Any warm body who can afford an NRA gun for sale" is, though.

I'm sure you've seen the exposé vidfs of guys buying AR15s or worse at a gun show while masquerading as an ex-con planning to kill his neighbour asap.

As one guy said it, rather tongue-in-cheekily, "I don't want to wait 7 days to buy a gun -- I can't stay mad that long!"

One can have all the gun laws on the books, make it tough to get one,
ammo, et. But the bad guy isn't going through all that to get a gun. He will
get his from his friendly neigbhourhood gun dealer's trunk.

Unless every gun, at point of manufacture is set to be identified easily almost anytime down the line.

The Coast Guard & BATF's jobs are to keep foreign originated guns(etc) from entering the country.

Even as an outsider, I'd just like to see the periodic slaughter of dozens or more children come to an end.

I don't own a gun, & am fine without one

Did you also do small arms training/drills?

I guess you suport gun rights mainly for those who, like yourself, have a healthy appreciation for what guns are and can do, eh?

A friend of mine jumped through near infinte loops to get her habndgun licence here. She's no NRA whackjob, but neither was she out to become a victim of an abusive & threatening ex-husband.

She trained & praxcticed(& still does)

I want her armed & others just like her -- responsible & all about personal responsibility over "I got them thar rights, you know"

Because the poo-storm Jefferson envisioned from his own country's leadership, is coming up here.

There are several militias traing up north who have caves full of ready to use ammo, & dozens of guns each masrtching said ammo.

When The Man shjows up to confiscate, they can all fiund a beat up riflke in a closet that matches the type registered & hand it over, "There you go, sir."

"Where are the 8 million rounds of ammo you've bought over the years?"

"Oh, somewhere back there in the woods where I target shoot birds & stuff, but I suck at it."

most quality assault rifles have an equivalent round size in a hunting rifle of some sort (old, crappy, leftover from their daddy's time in WW2 -- doesn't matter for the purposes of these groups to lay low & prepare)

I expect you've got a number of groups up in Idaho & Montana similarly equipped & practiced, even outside the obvious nutjob cults. . .

I tell that oneto Maruinesm, but Ui generally close with the one about the 200 army men in training & a marine yells insults from up the hill a rthem,. The sarge sent a guy up to shut him up; he came back bleeding & crawling.

"No, your honour, I know they can; I just don't want THEM to know!"

There was a guy who was down and depressed. His doctor gave him options to cheer himself up.

    Doc: Buy a new car.
Guy: I drive a nice Mercedes.

    Doc: Go on vacation.
Guy: I just got back from the Bahamas.

    Doc: Build a new house.
Guy: I live in a million dollar mansion.

Doc: So, why are you depressed??
    Guy: I only make $100 a week.

    "Potty Training for Fidonet Participants"?

They need that in the FLAME echoes.

"Great minds think alike" (or is it "small ones seldom differ?")

    Both.

I do recall t hat back in late '79. Up here in Canada, as elementary school punks we had respect for Reagan & how Iran must be trembling knowing he was taking the reins on 20-January!

I'm not going to get into the political stuff here...I don't want to antagonize the moderator. Besides, my sucking up skills need work right
    now. <G>

Didn't they release the hostages just prior, or within that week?

They released them once Reagan was sworn in.

    "You're a "SUB-marine" so get 'below' the water, NOW! *BLAM!* bloop-bloop-bloop. . .

Q: How do you drown a bunch of blondes in a submarine?
    A: Knock on the door.

Makes you wonder if they got told to leave early, so you'd stay there.

    Nope.
The first one had a medical condition he didn't tell anyone until it
kicked in the first week or so.
The second one was dumb as a box of rocks. Couldn't comprehend anything
and parking ain't rocket science. I mean if I can do it....
We've had some real winners sent to parking and many were members of the Doofus family, which seems to grow by the day.
This guy made a Doofus seem smart and I nicknamed him Knucklehead.

Even if you prepared a manual, you wonder how quick it'd take for them to learn it.

That's why training is actually an on-going process. Always something
new to learn. After a while its mostly just sneaky little things we do.
I.E., regular violator for example. Parking can't link the car to
anyone. One day the violator leaves something in plain sight with their name, student number, etc. Got ya.
One time we had a regular who owed over $1,000 in fines. Never could
    find anything on her.
One day she parked in a pay lot while the central pay machine was being worked on. It so happened trees in the area were being trimmed as well.
The woman parked under some trees.
The woman in the office working on the machine walked over, mentioned the tree trimming and casually asked for her name and phone number in case she might need to move. Got her. And she paid.

I was raised "old school"...where "children should be seen and not heard; and not speak unless spoken to -- then it was 'Yes/No Ma'am/Sir'".

We must have had the same parents!
    Or graduates of parenting school.

I can't recall what I was writing about.

That's why quoting in QWK Mail and email comes in handy. <G>

I sometimes tell someone when I ask that and can't recall "Oh, you
    weren't listening either?"

Just do like the movie where Jimmy Stewart said he was going to go get "some sun on the beach", and this woman said he was swearing. <G>

Nowadays, the parents don't want to discipline their kids, as "it'll

Or when it doesn't work, it's "Technology, Phooey!!". That was the title
of one of "The Ant And The Aardvark" cartoons. Basically, the ant was the roadrunner, and the aardvark was Wile E. Coyote.

Well, the aardvark builds this computer (supposedly smarter than he was),
to try various methods to get the ant...and each time, it fails.

So, in the last scenes of the cartoon, the exchange goes like this:

Aardvark: As a computer, you stink!!
Computer: Who said I was a computer?? I'm an automatic pop up toaster!!
    And, I'll prove it.

    <spews out 100 pieces of toast>

As the cartoon ends, the aardvark, practically buried in a mound of toast,
asks "Anybody got a pound of butter??" <G>.

It's not the big problem it used to be.

    "Potty Training for Fidonet Participants"?
They need that in the FLAME echoes.

Nah, "Flame" echos are for that -- so I have no beef with them & actually respecvt them for taking it to wherre it's welcome & on topic. Better there than in my echoes, or in here. . . Unless you're speaking of regular echoes that improperly become flame echoes when not defined as such? Then, yes, a good instruction manual (STEP ONE: place head into the giant toilet bowl, STEP TWO: pull chain)

"Great minds think alike" (or is it "small ones seldom differ?")

Q: How do you drown a bunch of blondes in a submarine?
    A: Knock on the door.

Blondes do get a hard time. I only tease the Suicide blondes(dyed by her own hand) because they actually believe bleaching their hair changes them in to more likeable people)

"Blondes have more fun." -- yreah, only because they're easier to find in the dark!

... Is French kissing in France just called kissing?

They actually used to call it English Kissing! But now just kissing. . .

I think here we no longer need to sauy french kissing, as that's the default for those in a relationship -- you'd only find a "grandmotherly peck" to be notable in talking about it (I don't think people should talk about it - no kiss & tell, people)

I've never said, "Let's French Kiss, baby!" Maybe rtefer to it as "necking" whjich implies a more passionate kissing session, that may include tongue play
& nibbles on the neck, if she likes that (most did)

But, yeah, mostly, couples just talk of kissing & kiss appropriately for for themn, for the situation.

I wonder what the Aussies call Australian Kissing? Or if they kiss any other way?

They refer to necking as pas. In the UK, theru speak of snogging for a good old fashioned necking season; canoodling is separately negotiated at the time of the snog session.

One one sitcom or other (Maybe Roseanne or the sequel); an older sib advised the tyounger to steal 3rd instead of going from 1st base to 2nd as usual. Oh, right, got it -- it was on That 70s Show, wth one of the basement crew advising Eric.

Now that we're done with having kids, either 2nd & 3rd base is usually the home run for me! ("ground ruled homer," perhaps?); I get full points for winning the game & so does sje -- can't get that at the World Series!

I still want to know how many Americans would've canceled their sports program if ever rthe East & West were both won by Canadian teams (Montreal Expos when we had thewm in the East & Toronto Bnluejays in the west--who you know play a good game-- we took the pennat two years in a row('92 & '93)

You'd hear clicks all over the nation as the tv when off & people muttering, "Huh! I never liked baseball anyway."

See, we don't mind when you win the Stanley Cup in hockey, as they're all Canadian players anyway! ;)

&, I understand it, our football league is superior to the NFL for spectators.

Need some hockey style fights to pump up the ratings, though, I'd say. . .

Orrrr, hmmm. . .get a giant-ass lake & play football on it in skates!

I wish I had the money to set this up - it'd be a sure money maker for decades to come! & only we have big lakes remote enough not to be affected by the heat from port cities.

Your billionaire investors who like sports would have to invest to be minority partners in our teans, as you'd not really have any teams (maybe one or two in Alaska; & maybe one in northern Minnesota)

Hmmm. . then basketball on ice! *LOL*

There is nothing similar happening on the US border.

So the US is not a soverign and peaceful nation?

I never said the US was not a soverign and peaceful nation.

If a bunch of Americans started pouring across the Canadian border, at
places that are not border crossings, how would you expect that your
    country would act?

Your not making any sense. Americans are free to cross the border into Canada.

As we can see in your opinions regarding what happened in Ottawa recently
(it was good for Trudeau to use his powers) vs. your opinions of what happened in the US in 2020 (it was bad for the US to even mention using powers), I know it is different when it is happening in your own country.
Not so easy to pass judgement then.

2020 is a different matter altogether and has nothing to do with what we are talking about.

How many missiles/rockets/tanks have landed in the USA?

    How many have been killed/injured?

How many refugees have left the USA and how many are still trying to escape?

The point I am trying to make is that there is nothing similar happening on your southern border that compares even remotely, to the situation on the borders of Ukraine, and for the last week inside Ukraine.

Only at official border crossings, so they can verify that I have a right
to be there. I am not allowed to just wander across into Canada anywhere.

Either you have never crossed the US-Canadian border (legally) or you are not making sense.

    How many have been killed/injured?

The message you are responding to was about two different subjects. I understand that is VERY difficult for you to follow.

2020 USA vs. 2022 Canada is not different. In both cases, people were protesting and wanted their voices heared. In the case of 2022 Canada, they were not setting fires or looting businesses, while in 2020 USA some of
    them were.

How many missles/rockets/tanks did the Canadian protesters use? None.

How many were killed or injured? None, from what I can tell, which is less than in the US protests.

Yet you claimed that using force and monetary punishments against your
Canadian protesters was necessary, but using force against the 2020 US protesters was a no-no.

USA vs. Ukraine, the other subject:
Americans have been killed by persons who came illegally over our Southern border. They don't use missles, rockets or tanks, but they have used
rifles, knives and their bare hands.

How many refugees have left the USA and how many are still trying to escape?

I think you have that backwards, in this case.

The point I am trying to make is that there is nothing similar happening on yo
southern border that compares even remotely, to the situation on the borders
Ukraine, and for the last week inside Ukraine.

There are invaders. Joe, the original poster, whose questions to you you
have ignored, said besides the military things. Basically, the US and Ukraine both have persons coming over our borders illegally. People like you think that is OK for the USA but not OK for Ukraine and, although you keep dodging it, I bet it is not so OK for Canada, either (especially since we might join
up with those horrible, threatening truckers who like freedom that you don't).

Meanwhile, I believe it is not ok in the case of Ukraine or the US.

We have freedom here in Canada. You can make your voice heard without blocking a border crossing or disrupting life in a city you don't live in.

How many were killed or injured? None, from what I can tell, which is less than in the US protests.

Yes, if I remeber right the 2020 protests were about police brutality and the killing of people unjustly.

Yet you claimed that using force and monetary punishments against your Canadian protesters was necessary, but using force against the 2020 US protesters was a no-no.

    I made no such claim.

USA vs. Ukraine, the other subject:
Americans have been killed by persons who came illegally over our Southern border. They don't use missles, rockets or tanks, but they have used

Sure, but there is a huge difference between what is happening on the Ukraine border and what is happening on your southern border. They are not similar in any way.

How many refugees have left the USA and how many are still trying to
    escape?

An invasion force of 190,000 is not the same as what is happening on your souther border.

    Fair enough. . .

I have nothing against immigrants, we are a nation of immigrants, just as Canada is. (And for that matter the entire western hemisphere).
I just want this country (as does Canada) know who is coming.
Come in the front door, not through a back window.

You got it! For those into open borders, ask them if they're into leaving their house's doors open 24/7 & anyone who wants can come in, squat, get fed, & get an allowance. . .

Even as lazy rabble rousers in entertainment (including news magazines)
criticise you, we, as a nation, generally want only the best for our big
    brother to the south
Otherwise we might pull another 1812 on ya!

I'm pretty sure we won that one, along with the Pig Wars & 54/40. . .

We even made you keep a bunch of our unwanteds (French Acadians, now called "Cajuns")

We didn't need all that extra land we had -- we just took it to show we could.

&, yes, I am aware you subtly put forth that the war was between the USA & the British, 55 years before "Canada" formed; but we used the term Canada already (Upper & Lower Canada for what's now Quebec & Ontario)

The men who chased yours to the Gulf wore British uniforms, but called themselves Canadians(in English)

    Just joking about, mate!

Let's call it a tie, so out of 3 wars with youse, Canada won 2.5!

    Pretty good odds.

Your generals have been planning another ever since, but realized it would be impossible to win, so dropped them all.

I have a copy of a White Paper drawn up by some 5-star generals in the 1990s covering an exploration of a full frontal attack on British Columbia (north of your Washington State) which concluded it to be unfeasible, & that doing so would result in too many losses (men, ordnance, & reputation) to the US.

The older plans to invade Canada's centre are public domain now, & likewise were rtuled unfeasible.

    It's better we stay friends.

You get decent lumber, ores, & fish -- we get paid for same.

We get some not far away places to have a sunny & warm winter vacation, paying for it, of course. . .

BC offers some of the best sdkiing this side of the Alps. . .

It's betterthis way -- as brothers (but in the wrestling match that is our sibling rivalry, we're bigger & on top.)

That's where Uncle Sam came from; we had a general na,ed Samuel some thing-or- other & he ordered you to "say 'uncle.'"!

& like in your anthem, you romanticised losing a major battle & used it as a rallying cry for all Americans ever since, to take up arms & fight, fight, fight!

    Best to yas, mate!

Some of it is debated still, & that's okay -- ancient history, under 200 years of old rugs! I have no feelings on the matter. Y'all are Canada's big brother/uncle. (Trump era notwithstanding ;) )

We even made you keep a bunch of our unwanteds (French Acadians, now called
    "Cajuns")
Now living in the swamps of Louisiana.

Yup & makng some of the best food on the planet, as I've heard it said -- it always looks so good on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives!

Life went on & we became best of friends for many years!
That's like the US and Britain, as well as numerous countries in Europe.
They go at it tooth and nail for a while then become friends again.
Of course they sort of have to, being so close to each other.

Like boxers who try to basdically kill each other in the ring for some time, but then go drinking together yhe next day, best of buddies (wrestlers, too, like any other co-actors in the same series)

I don't believe in grudges anyway; I personally lost nothing in any of thosewars. Onlyl 54/40 & the Pig Wars really were anywhere near where I ended up!

& even if I did lose some thing, I'm pretty darn sure nobody alive today was directly responsible!

Same as I'm not responsible for anything OTHER white men may have done in past times. I'm only responsible for myself & I'm an all-round nice guy, & hold no prejudices, & do all I can to right what wrongs still exist.

Pretty much everyone I know is the same. Not sure where the media gets its hate news from. . . Never met an evil man-hating feminist &/or lesbian.

I got no beef with either. I havea beef with certain specific ideas, philosophies, & quotes beng propagated, but never met anyone who ascribes to them.

I conclude the media has a giant stick & they're stirring the muck below the seat in a berry farm's outhouse used by seasonal pickers for the past 20+ years.

I say those who stir the 'muck,'(to be delicate & genteel *snrk*) should have to lick the spoon!

Best of the coming week to you, sir!
& continuing good health for you & your family. . .

I for one am opposed to invading our good neighbours to the north.
For one thing its too cold there. We already have one ice box (Alaska).

    & Minnesota & Michigan's 'mitten'! & Maine, & others. . .

We could use some tropical beaches, so feel free in giving us the opportunity to fight you backwards & claim some prime sunshine real estate! ;)

(yeah, as if!); I still think we should have approached Cuba about becoming a non-sovereign territory of Canada. . .

I hate to tell you this but, with Trudeau in charge, I'd not be too confident. Then again, with Biden in charge, neither am I! :D
With that in mind, we'd best keep the peace lest we get to fighting each other and then wind up both speaking Chinese or Russian! :O

Pass, I'm all for peace with you guys & everyone else, up to a point, of course! Evil needs to be stopped, & alliances need to be honoured.

RRussia wants it all -- they've got China, Cuba, & North Korea; if they can hget Ukrained annexed, thy';l be in positon to plan zooming across all of Europe, after shutting sown the export of oil to Europe.

I'm picturing my own usual strategy in playing Risk. (I start in Asia & pusjh westward through Asfrica & Eyrope, then I'm hitting the America from both directions at once with a full army in play); I need to get back onto that game
-- 'twas fun! I have a DOS one somewhere that I registered way back.

I grat all their freedom of chjoice & preferences, so long as it isn't harming others, & taking our money to support their causes that we don't believe in, is a harm, IMO.

    Concur.

I work darn hard for what little I take home! I honestly feel I deserve to keep at least this much, or more,

    Again, concur.
Be nice if we had a check list of yes/no where our tax money is spent.
I doubt those guys in DC or Ottawa would honour it.

    Same here.
People are responsible for their own actions, not their ancestors.
If that were true where does it stop?
Should we hold people responsible for their grandparents actions? G-G-grandparents and on back to Adam and Eve? At what point is it said "Ok, nothing past that date is important"?

Same as I'm not responsible for anything OTHER white men may have done

    I think we're thinking of the same suggestion. . . hehh. . .

Those voting against the "ilegals" are doing grwat -- they use them for cheap(beliow legal minwage) in their farms or estates, then make a big noise against them to distract everyone, & to up the price on them for when they're through with the current batch.

Be nice if we had a check list of yes/no where our tax money is spent.
I doubt those guys in DC or Ottawa would honour it.

Nope --for one thing, they'd be out on their collective benchwarmers first thing!

I say there's a core set of costs that are must haves for everyone to participate in, federally, (national defense, of course, & minimally required amnounts to operate the government itself *sigh*, & others); let's vote on therest of where our money goes.

& for rasises for pols -- they can propose a raise bill, but it only goes after the next election, so if it's a bad move, the voters can directly respond to it.

I mean, for you & me, raises go with merits & proven value to the boss. Why should these yutzes be excepted?

That's wshen I finally bega to become a proper adult, when I realized that if I could blame my tendencies & troubles on my dad, I must grant him the same privilege & then I had to think of how far back that might go. Then I realized it's simpler to man up & take personal responsibilty -- If I knew poker then as I do now, I'd decide that I'm going to win even with crumby hands dealt to me. (I do all the time)

I made someone fold 3 aces one time, & I had far less (only I knew this for sure) in a live game a bunch of years ago -- fun stuff & a clear lesson in life.

Not sure where the media gets its hate news from
They like to take the worst of anything and make it seem everyone
    believes that.

& if they can';t find any, they're not averse to making some thing up out of whole cloth, or to manipulate people or events so as to make them more newsworthy.

You watch a "Live" newscast on tv -- do you know 100% for sure when & where each block of video was recorded, or even created in a studio?

They've madesome errors, like people pointing out how the big crowd had du8plicate groups of people pasted in here & there. Or when shadows indicate the stated time is incorrect. It's harder to pull it off now,m with millions the world over easily seeing it via internet & analyzing it with new tools daily. . .

    Good.

Yup, I've talked with those with wild opinions both left & right of me, & even more or less in my wedge; I mentally shrug & move on as quickly as I can extricate myself without setting them off.

I do remind some people, as needed, that they do NOT speak for "all" they claim to speak for. Opinons are like rectums(recta?) -- everyone has one, but only the hot wind output of your own don't stink.
