Consistent sellers are manga graphic novels (the ones you read
back to front), Captain Underpants, Bad Guys, Dog Man, Wimpy
Kid, Dork Diaries, The Princess in Black, Diary of an 8-Bit
Warrior, the book series by Rick Riordan, the different series
by Sarah Maas, and Cinda Williams Chima, and Victoria Aveyard,
    and Casandra Clare.

Never heard of any of those.

    The Harry Potter series are a staple;

That I've heard of. Never read.

When there is an adaptation to a tv series, many people want to
get a head start (or get "more to the story") and read the
    books.

    I know of fan fiction.

Oh man, you *ARE* pretty old then! LOL

Captain Underpants has been around for at least 15 years.

No matter.. You would certainly have heard of the above if you
    had kids.

The books are not bad at all. The film, practically follows the
book scene by scene. It's fun quick read even for a grown-up.

Fan fiction is something else. I was referring to adaptations
    of books to film/tv.

When there is news of an adaption coming along, the interest
for the book version increases - quite a bit. For instance,
Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time is coming along to tv. The books
have already been redesigned with new covers and increased
prices. A new generation of people are therefore "discovering"
    the series all over again.

Not a bad thing as far as I'm concerned. Anything that prompts people to actually read more is a good thing.

Hollywood used to take a big selling novel and adapt it for the screen
and along the way change a lot and at times only the title was the only thing to do with the book.
They did that a lot with biography movies. Add characters and plots.
There was movie adapted from an autobiography in the '40s. The author
was asked what he thought of the movie. He replied it was interesting, whose life was it about? :)
