    MEMORIES RULES
    Revised 1 August 2017

FidoNet is a "Virtual Community" where we are all
representative of the population. Each ECHO is like a
neighborhood of the virtual community. The MEMORIES echo is _our_
neighborhood. Let's keep it a nice place to hang out.

This is the Memories Echo. It is a non region specific
conference dedicated to all persons interested in nostalgia and
trivia, with some related chatter on subjects of interest to
seniors. It's a bit like the pot bellied stove in the old general
store. Conversations usually start with reminiscing of something
from the past, but seem to lead in many directions, which the
Moderator generally tolerates so long as it's civilized
conversation and doesn't violate any of the specific rules below.
It's a group of fun to be around folks. Come on in.

The Moderator may appoint a successor, or call an election
any time by posting an announcement in the echo. Such
announcement shall define the rules of, time frame for, and the
names of those responsible for monitoring and publishing the
results of the election. In the event of the death or incapacity
of the Moderator, the Co Moderator shall have all the rights
    ascribed to the Moderator.

This is a FidoNet Backbone Echo, and, as such, adheres to
    FidoNet regulations for echoes.
    _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

This echo is dedicated to the loving MEMORIES of:

Ronni Toth, its founder, and Kent Anderson, her successor
moderator, and to Bill White who left us for personal reasons.

May we keep the high standards they set for us.
    _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

This echo is open to everyone who complies with the
    following rules:

    1. Topics may be broad, but not stray too far from the purpose of
the echo and that is to share germane conversation with those
having a common interest in things past. Excessive chatter, if
not related to times past, will be considered off topic.

    2. DON'T get personal! Personal attacks (flames) and profanity
are unnecessary and unwelcome in this echo. And keep it clean:
This is a family echo. Risque remarks and off color taglines will
    cause a Moderator response.

    3. Present day religion and politics, NO!

    4. Only the Moderator will address off topic traffic. If a fellow
participant tries to moderate you, just ignore them. If someone
insults you, do not respond in kind: nothing hurts more than
being ignored. If necessary, send e mail to a moderator.

    5. NO private messages.

    6. Handles or aliases allowed in part of your BBSing with the
addition of your real name at the end of the message.

    7. No test messages, nor advertisements of any kind (including
    BBS ads) allowed.

    8. This conference may not be ported to any other network's mail
system without the express written permission of the Moderator.
Porting or gating the echo into the Internet or to any Usenet
newsgroup is expressly forbidden. Note: The carrying of the
echoes by an Internet site is all right, provided that any

messages originating from that site, if not within this
conference's rules, are subject to corrective action by the
    Moderator.

    9. Overquoting: Remember to delete those parts of the message
that don't relate to your reply. Leave just enough so that others
can pick up on what's going on, or refresh their memories if they
read the original post. NEVER, EVER requote signature, origin
lines, addresses, nor taglines unless they are pertinent to what
    you're saying.

    10. Underquoting: It is most distressing to see part of a message
and a response, and have no idea as to what either of the
messages relates. Do your quoting intelligently, and leave enough
info to be certain that even a disinterested party will know
what's going on. This faux pas is often related to, and could be
    mitigated by following:

    11. Subject not related to the topic of the message. All too
often a message that started on a particular subject takes
another tack. Unless the poster replying changes the subject, the
message bears no relation to its indicated topic. Please try to
remember when replying to see that the subject matter and the
    subject are in agreement.

    12. These guides are subject to change at any time. If you find a
way to be annoying, we will make a rule to cover it.

    13. These rules condense into four words: "Be Nice Have Fun"

    for a bit of rust...

Well, I was going to suggest Pledge...but I think that only applies to
    your commitment to the echo.

I haven't been on the BBS in a few days, due to health and other issues.

Yesterday, I thought my central heat and air conditioning unit had failed. The fan worked, but the console was dark, and I couldn't power up the heater
or the air conditioner. So, I called the people who service it, and they
asked "Have you changed the batteries in the thermostat on the wall??". I
asked "Batteries??" (it never dawned on me about that).

They said "there should be 2 AA batteries in there...remove the cover,
change out the batteries, and if the old one hadn't corroded the terminals,
all should be well again...otherwise, the corrosion would damage or destroy
the thermostat". Well, the corrosion hadn't started yet, but once I did
replace the batteries, and switch the unit on, all was well. It got chilly
in the house last night...down into the lower 60's.

Speaking of batteries, with the time change this weekend, folks should
not only set their clocks ahead, but also CHANGE the batteries in their
smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and in their NOAA Weather Radio units. We're into tornado season here, and this coming Sunday could be very stormy, weather wise.

At the eye doctor Monday, they "suspect" I'm in the very early stages
of glaucoma. They want me back in 3 months, but to call them if I notice
any sudden changes. They can give me medication to slow its progress. I
hope to finish the chiropractic care next Monday...a nice settlement from
Geico for all I've gone through after the wreck, would make a nice birthday present.

I'm trying to get "samples" of purgative tablets for the colonoscopy. My prescription drug coverage considers it a "tier 4", and I can't see paying
well over $100 or more, for just 2 doses of 12 tablets each.

Big Pharma is making money hand over fist as it is...they say it's for research, but it's also for them wining and dining medical staff, then
doing their presentation on why the doctors should dispense their
drugs...then for all the radio, TV, and print advertising. That's why
they try to keep stuff from going generic.

At least the colonoscopy isn't until April 8. Two other procedures that I
had scheduled, were canceled for the winter storm last month, with resulting appointment backlogs at the clinics (one was closed 3 weeks for water damage from burst pipes), probably won't be done until mid-April at the earliest.

I've had so much other stuff outside the BBS, that today is the first
day I've been able to logon in awhile.

I could probably cope with pains, but lack of eyesight would be

Same here. I joke (truthfully) that several years ago, I had to have
blind ham radio operators direct me out of a hamfest parking lot, and
out of a hospital parking deck (that's my legacy in that hobby <G>).
At least it has been "caught early"...the same thing as for when cancer
is found...as it's more easily treatable.

Speaking of which, I've started preparation for my colonoscopy next month...getting the paperwork filled out and turned in, and getting
the prep work items. At least this time, I won't have to guzzle a
gallon of NASTY liquid...but take 2 dozen pills...splitting the doses
6 hours apart (12 per dose). My prescription drug company wasn't going
to cover it (it's a new drug, classed as Tier 4), and I told the gastrointerologist that I was NOT going to pay over $200 for 24
tablets. Well, they worked it out where my co-pay will be only $10.

I think you have much more other stuff INSIDE your body that is
probably more important to deal with. Hope things work out for
    you!

It is so true, that if you don't have your health, you have nothing.
Yet, I know folks who refuse to go to the doctors office, medical
clinic, emergency room, hospital, etc., because "they don't want to
be seen naked". I can't convince them that "the medical folks have
seen it all before, and nudity means nothing to them".

Dollar Tree stores carry alkaline 9V batteries for $1 a piece. An astonishingly good deal these days. I admit to shopping Dollar Tree a
lot as they have many of the basics I need. I am learning to live on a
fixed budget (currently $0). My mom taught me to shop around for good
deals so when I go shopping, I usually will go to four or five stores to
get what I want. A little extra time and gas but for the money I save,
    it's worth it.

fruit of the pineapple. A fresh pinapple is amazing - drizzle
some honey over a serving and it makes for a nice dessert on its
own. The canned versions (pegged for convenience) are syrupy
catastrophies and unnaturally boosted with sweeteners. But the
fresh variety packs a nice punch of sweet completely naturally.

..I know folks who refuse to go to the doctors office,
medical clinic, emergency room, hospital, etc., because
"they don't want to be seen naked". I can't convince them
that "the medical folks have seen it all before, and
    nudity means nothing to them".

All the more reason to keep the body fit, worthy of display and
    OUT of those institutions.

    Joe,

    Priorities, priorities, priorities.

This is a hobby...even if you think that statement is heresy.

    It's a life style. :)

Or like one of my other hobbies...

Square Dancing is not a matter of life and death...it's much more
    important than that. :)

Now, excuse me while I get some yellowrocks (hugs) from the women
(although right now, those are "virtual" until the COVID-19 crap
    lessens).

Speaking of which, in Arkansas, the cases have been declining, and
if they continue to do so, Governor Asa Hutchinson will CHANGE the
"directives" to "guidelines" come April (I hope that's not an April
Fool). And, if supplies permit, vaccinations will be made available
    to ALL Arkansans by May.

    Sean,

Dollar Tree stores carry alkaline 9V batteries for $1 a piece. An astonishingly good deal these days. I admit to shopping Dollar Tree a
lot as they have many of the basics I need. I am learning to live on a fixed budget (currently $0). My mom taught me to shop around for good deals so when I go shopping, I usually will go to four or five stores
to get what I want. A little extra time and gas but for the money I
    save, it's worth it.

My late parents grew up during the depression, so they were truly,
frugal cheapskates...nothing was wasted...food or otherwise. I think
of the joke on Hee-Haw where the guy noted "My family was so poor
growing up, that they couldn't afford shoes. So they painted my feet
black, and laced up my toes". :P

Most folks nowadays think that "money grows on trees, and is always
going to be there". It's like the deal of "this free stuff". As Robert
Heinlein noted, TANSTAFFL -- "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch"
(some BBS's have been named that). It's like the shelves at the grocery
store, or the buffet line before COVID-19. If someone isn't there to restock/replenish what is on there, sooner or later, it's going to be empty...and the place has to close down.

The perfect example is prior to a winter storm in Arkansas. The joke
is that the TV meteorologists will issue "A Grocery Store Warning"...
and if you don't get to the store fast, you won't find:

    1) A slice of bread (never mind an entire loaf)
    2) A glass of milk (never mind an entire container)
    3) A mug of beer (never mind a whole case)
    4) A sheet of toilet paper (never mind a roll or pack)

And, all this toilet paper hoarding with COVID-19. Were these the
ones that gave the Chinese the idea to do anal swabs to check for it??

The nasal swabs are very uncomfortable, and I saw a story where a
woman suffered a puncture to her brain, and spinal fluid leaked out,
because they stuck the swab in too far.

I had one done before my hernia surgery last June, and have to do
another one next month before my colonoscopy. I'm still too young for
    a COVID-19 shot (I'll be 61 soon)...but in Arkansas, Governor Asa
Hutchinson has said that "If cases keep declining, the directives
will change to guidelines come April...and if supply permits, shots
will be available to all adult Arkansans by May".

I'll believe it when I see it.

Here, we have mask mandates but they are not enforced. Many people out
here still are going to the store so I can go in and shop.

You're right as I have discovered the same thing. However, like you
said, it's relatively rare and most of the products like that I don't
use. You do have to be careful on food items sometimes, such as the
canned goods. A $1 can of Chef Boyardee pasta is 88 cents next door at Walmart.

Being on food stamps, I watch the prices very carefully on food.

There's nothing wrong with that at all. I have learned to become very
frugal myself though I am thankful that I am receiving food stamps right
now. It's not a lot of money but it's enough to where I will not go
    hungry.

The perfect example is prior to a winter storm in Arkansas. The joke

clear off the shelves. It's stupid but it also shows people have no
idea about being prepared for a disaster.

I have seen so many funny memes on the Internet about that ...

The nasal swabs are very uncomfortable, and I saw a story where a
woman suffered a puncture to her brain, and spinal fluid leaked out, because they stuck the swab in too far.

The last time I had a COVID test, the tech did not try to probe my brain
but swabbed my far-rear nasal passage. It was slightly uncomfortable
    but not painful.

I had one done before my hernia surgery last June, and have to do another one next month before my colonoscopy.

I'll be having one at the end of April. I asked for another endoscopy
so they can take a look at my ulcer again and stretch out my esophagus
with a balloon (I have a crushed esophagus that gives me problems
    swallowing).

    I'm still too young for
a COVID-19 shot (I'll be 61 soon)...but in Arkansas, Governor Asa Hutchinson has said that "If cases keep declining, the directives
will change to guidelines come April...and if supply permits, shots
will be available to all adult Arkansans by May".

I can get one through the VA if I want but I am waiting for the
Johnson & Johnson shot to become available. It's a standard adrenovirus
shot (like the flu shot) and it's a single shot. This partiuclar shot
has far less side effects than the mRNA ones (the rest) and it is
designed to, if you catch COVID, lessen the symptoms. They say that
with this shot, you will not die from COVID.

Being that I've already had COVID-19 last October, I am not as in need
as others (I'm still producing antibodies) but I will break down and get
    the J & J shot.

    Later,

    August,

I never heard of a thing like that.

It's the same people who rebuilt the furnace from it's original
oil/AC to propane/AC. The only original component was the AC
part. I guess the "wait time" is charactaristic of older AC
units? BUT.. they could have at least told me so BEFORE they
    decided to come over.

I'm supposed to get mine serviced in early May. It's working
properly...but if there's a threat of lightning, I turn if off,
because a power interruption could fry the compressor.

I guess I could have fought over it. But I decided not to
complain and just pay the d*mn thing. I haven't called them
over for anything else since. People say that you should have
"furnace checked" every pre-winter season. Screw that. I just
maintain filter changes myself, and have never noticed a problem
    since.

I had another unexpected bill overnight. The batteries in the
Schlage keyless door luck have failed, and I couldn't get inside
the house. The garage door is double locked from the inside, and
I don't have keys to the back door. So, Dr. Locksmith came by,
and was able to get me in. I was able tighten the door lock deal
back, and figure out how to lock the deadbolt...which I'll need
if the keyless lock has to stay unlocked for now. The thing is,
the small screw on the inside part of the door may be stripped,
or I don't have a small enough phillips type screwdriver, let
alone the strength, to turn it to get it off, and change the
batteries. The call cost me $165...I'll be glad when the next
COVID-19 stimulus arrives, or several of my expenses will be
HOT later this month. I have overdraft protection, but will be
hit with a $35 fee with each one.

That's the price we pay for wining and dining on sugars
and processed foods? :/ I think that we (as consumers)
can make better choices with the foods we eat so as to
mitigate the marshaling of health problems.

And, the processed foods are drowning in sodium...never mind
    eating anchovies off pizza. :P

cocktail, but have decided to shy away from those.

I never thought I'd see the day when there'd be no taboo on products

    Sean,

There's nothing wrong with that at all. I have learned to become very frugal myself though I am thankful that I am receiving food stamps
right now. It's not a lot of money but it's enough to where I will not
    go hungry.

When I became my late Mom's caregiver, I got so where I just ate one meal
a day...usually lunch. I rarely eat breakfast, unless I have to go out early.
I haven't done a ham radio license exam in over a year, due to COVID-19, but the tests were in the morning.

That happens here also. 1/2" of snow sends others into a panic and
they clear off the shelves. It's stupid but it also shows people have
no idea about being prepared for a disaster.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) recommends one have enough non-perishable food and potable water to last at least 72 hours (3 days). Unfortunately, very few are that prepared.

I have seen so many funny memes on the Internet about that ...

I guess I wasn't looking for that right string. :P

The last time I had a COVID test, the tech did not try to probe my
brain but swabbed my far-rear nasal passage. It was slightly uncomfortable but not painful.

A lady friend I know wet her pants when they did it to her.

I'll be having one at the end of April. I asked for another endoscopy
so they can take a look at my ulcer again and stretch out my esophagus with a balloon (I have a crushed esophagus that gives me problems swallowing).

    Bless your heart.
