• Wasps Nests&Bird Nests

From Ed Vance@1:2320/105 to All on Tue May 14 22:58:00 2019
    Howdy!,

The LP Gas Tank in the backyard used to occasionally get a Wasp Nest
inside of the Lid, or a Bird would build a nest inside the Lid.

I cut a small piece of Screen (about 5 Inch square).
in the center of it I made a 2 inch cut to go over the Gas Pipe.

Since I put that piece of screen wire in the Lid I haven't seen
a Wasp Nest or Birds Nest when I raised the lid to see how much
    LP Gas the indicator shows.

I folded 1/2 inch of the bottom of the screen so the Lid would hold it
    in place.

    Just bragging.

    Ed,

The LP Gas Tank in the backyard used to occasionally get a Wasp Nest EV>inside of the Lid, or a Bird would build a nest inside the Lid.

Three reasons I prefer the COLD weather instead...

    1) No insects -- especially the stinging ones, which I'm allergic to.

    2) No heat illness -- you'd be surprised how many go to the ER each
    summer.

    3) No tornadoes -- the next several days could be very stormy. In fact,
on the Storm Prediction Center Website yesterday (May 14), there was a
MARGINAL RISK of severe weather for Days 1, 2, and 3 -- with a SLIGHT
    to ENHANCED RISK of severe weather on Days 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 -- I've
never seen all 8 days with a severe weather risk area before.

Saturday into Sunday (especially Saturday night) looks very stormy here...with another potent system early next week...and all modes of
severe weather are possible. I got recertified as a Skywarn Storm
Spotter, with my new location (back at what was my Mom's home), and my
    new callsign.

But, if I have a report, I call the National Weather Service DIRECTLY,
as the weather nets around here had so many "lids"...with reports like:

    A) I have a funnel cloud that's not rotating (they're likely seeing scud clouds).

    B) The tornado sirens are going off.

    C) It just started raining/lightning here.

None of those are "reportable criteria". Several wouldn't be caught
dead checking into the monthly Skywarn Training Net (to learn proper
protocol, reporting procedures, etc.)...but they come out of the
woodwork when the real thing arrives.

That's another reason I changed my emphasis from weather to railroad
crossing safety. And, even the weather affects the trains. With Tornado Warnings, the signals are RED BLOCKED -- everything STOPS!! And, the
strong winds can blow the cars right off the rails!!

Is a scud cloud the same as a wall cloud? Or is it just one with a downward-pointing, non-rotating mass?

I have seen the latter... they often seem to accompany non-severe,
    sometimes cooler weather around here.

Cannot blame you there. Anything that keeps wasps out is a good thing.

    Mike,

Is a scud cloud the same as a wall cloud? Or is it just one with a MP>downward-pointing, non-rotating mass?

No. Here are the definitions from the National Weather Service
    Weather Glossary for both:

    ***

    Scud
Small, ragged, low cloud fragments that are unattached to a larger
cloud base and often seen with and behind cold fronts and thunderstorm
gust fronts. Such clouds generally are associated with cool moist air,
    such as thunderstorm outflow.

    ***

    Wall Cloud
A localized, persistent, often abrupt lowering from a rain-free base.
Wall clouds can range from a fraction of a mile up to nearly five miles
in diameter, and normally are found on the south or southwest (inflow)
side of the thunderstorm. When seen from within several miles, many wall
clouds exhibit rapid upward motion and cyclonic rotation.

However, not all wall clouds rotate. Rotating wall clouds usually develop before strong or violent tornadoes, by anywhere from a few minutes up to
nearly an hour. Wall clouds should be monitored visually for signs of persistent, sustained rotation and/or rapid vertical motion.

"Wall cloud" also is used occasionally in tropical meteorology to
describe the inner cloud wall surrounding the eye of a tropical cyclone,
but the proper term for this feature is eyewall.

    ***

I have seen the latter... they often seem to accompany non-severe, MP>sometimes cooler weather around here.

Sometimes, you get cold air funnels...here is the definition for that
    one:

    Cold Air Funnel
A funnel cloud or (rarely) a small, relatively weak tornado that can
develop from a small shower or thunderstorm when the air aloft is
unusually cold (hence the name). They are much less violent than other
    types of tornadoes.

    And, that's Meteorology 101 for today. :)
