• Slackware Linux 15 Alpha 1 Released

From Richard Falken@1:123/115 to All on Tue Feb 16 04:59:00 2021
    Hi people!

Slackware 15 is getting there, after an absurdly long wait.

From the changelong: "I'm not quite ready to call this beta yet, but you can call it 15.0-alpha 1."

Apparently there are some issues getting Firefox and Thunderbird to work with the Rust compiler, but at least there is a clear plan this time.

    Therefore:

I suggest we all go celebrate right now, with bourbon and hookers!

    Hey Richard!

    That is putting it mildly.

Good to know that I am not the only one but still not good that it is happening at all. Hm ... what is the clear plan?

I suggest we all go celebrate right now, with bourbon and hookers!

I am getting too old but will bend my elbow for a decent single malt scotch ... especially if someone else is buying.

    Life is good,

Yes, happy to see that also this morning.

Sounds good, but maybe a bit early. I suspect it will be several more
months yet, before an actual release of 15.0.

    I'll predict May 20th.

The clear plan is to fix the Firefox+Thunderbird+Rust issue, then calling it beta,
then stabilizing issues in the then-current tree, then calling it 15.0.

I know it is a bit too early, but never wast a good oportunity for Bourbon and hoockers.

If it gets released by the time the next OpenBSD release happens, I am gonna have a
lot of work upgrading systems :-)

Ah! I was hoping the clear plan contained some idea of how that will be accomplished. So far it doesn't look all that promising for a speedy release.
