Actually +2/3 since this one isn't quite up to date yet. As we speak
it is compiling x86_64-lmbrain-linux-gnu-gcc-10.2.0 from an
extra-special toolchain. The entire x86_64-lmbrain-linux-gnu should
be finished later today.

I am sticking with 5.7.15 for now. fbdev2 is still flakey on 5.8.1 although it at least gives some output so I assume it is being worked
on. There was no output on 5.8.0.
The entire x86_64-lmbrain-linux-gnu should be finished later

while it did not display any output could you ssh to it ?
in that case of yes, disable optimized fbdevs :)
