• CHRS: UTF-8 4

    Is it possible to send a correct CHRS kludge with jamnntpd. My jamnntpd server always uses
    ☺CHRS: UTF-8 2

    but the correct one would be
    ☺CHRS: UTF-8 4

    At present it isn't important. IIRC it relates to there being no known Fidonet software being sensitive to that 'level' value.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

    There is no level 4 support in JamNNTPd. No one has bothered to fix
    that. But it really doesn't matter, everything works ok even with that
    "UTF-8 2" kludge.

    Btw, your JamNNTPd is sending only the first three letters of your name. :)

    Why have standards, if they are ignored anyway? ;)

    I already assumed that most software works fine with "UTF-8 2", but I was not sure and it didn't feel right to have a non-conforming kludge in the message. But if everyone says it's fine, I can relax.

    Btw, your JamNNTPd is sending only the first three letters of your name. :)

    It's not JamNTTPd fault, it uses the name from the From field. In another network I'm using my nickname. Maybe I need to use separate NNTP accounts for every network / different names. But why bother, everyone can read my messages and my full name is in the pointlist ;).

    In our locale, Oli is a natural contraction for Oliver. It seems to be possible elsewhere as well.

    OTOH I've always wondered what the apostrophe in 'Tommi is hiding, if not long form of your name. :)

    Cheers,

    Very long time when fidonet was alive in Finland, the was one guy whose nick was //Albert. He was also a point of mine. Those two first signs "//" mean a remark in a certain programming language. So I started to use the remark sign of BASIC. :)

    For some reason most people in our locale think Olli is the natural contraction, but Oli is used too.

    Tommi is a common finish name. I guess it's already the long form of its given name. (Olli is also a common given name in Finland – in Germany it's mostly used as the short form of Oliver).

    Ooh. Well in that case if you ever see ::Paul, you may do the same...

    (Using :: was my favourite way of doing MS-DOS BATch REMark statements. Using that sequence instead stopped command.com from parsing a line of comment beyond the REM, which it would still do.)

    ;)

    I tried 1.05 on Linux some time ago, but there were some major problems (I cannot remember what it was - maybe a bug, maybe a stupid configuration error).

    REM is ok too. Quickbasic and PDS by Microsoft at least accepts ' as a REM. I still have those in my OS/2 system. ;)

    My patch for making JamNNTPd use "CHRS: UTF-8 4"

    Edit nntpserv.c and replace this:

    sprintf(line,"CHRS: %s 2",chrs);

    by this:

    if(stricmp(chrs,"UTF-8")!=0) sprintf(line,"CHRS: %s 2",chrs);
    else strcpy(line,"CHRS: UTF-8 4");

    My patch for making JamNNTPd use "CHRS: UTF-8 4"

    Why?

    After all those years, since that EXTRA "4" was suggested, there's still not a single editor known to man (or at least me) that actually uses it, or breaks by improper use of it. Has one such editor eventually surfaced?

    This old and decrepid (almost completely abandoned) software is currently kind of being worked on and updated. Can you say anything positive about that, instead?
