"smartquote" seems to work fine only with "def_showto off"

I don't see any major problems with "smartquote" and "def_showto on". I thought "smartquote" is independet from def_show and it should make no difference if def_show is on or off.

Sometimes it works ok, sometimes it does not. :)

When there is a from line "Oliver Thuns - Tommi Koivula", smartquote may
take initials O and K. First name Oliver, last name Koivula.

I have now both these settings on. Let's see.

    Looks good.
It should strip the whitespaces before the quotes though (if there are more than one)

In my opinion it should not modify the message after the user posts it.

I think it is now a good time to start the weekend and let the smartquote be off. ;)

I never saw these UTF-8 characters in the GoldEd or Thunderbird before, but I see them in Thunderbird's source view now. I wonder why nobody complained before. I hope it can be fixed easily, I really like the smartquote option.

Ok, It is not the problem with smartquote, it is a "feature" of "def_showto on" and how newsclient uses the From: field. As you can see, this news client thinks your initials are OTK.

If you cannot see the incorrect utf-8 characters, it is hard to complain. ;)

You cant. Well, at least not yet. It is my test version based on smapinntpd 1.1, with known jamnntpd bugs hopefully fixed.

This Sylpheed supports ftn style quoting, I set up the quote string as "%I> ", and now it is working just fine.

Also in HotDogEd (Android news reader) it is possible to set the quoting to "FTN". It however won't work ok if "def_showto on" is set in jamnntpd. :(

I've installed Claws Mail (fork of Sylpheed), which has the same feature. It's not really proper FTN style quoting though. For the first reply level it's fine, but then it gets messy

    instead of

Until there is no dedicated plugin for FTN quotes, smartquote is the best option (IMHO).
