• UTF-8 Support

From Flavio Bessa@4:801/188 to All on Wed Apr 19 14:25:11 2017
    Hello,

Well, I've managed to overcome the other difficulties I was experiencing with JAMNNTPD, and now the only pending issue is that apparently the latest version of Mozilla Thunderbird overrides the default text encoding you configure at the
newsgroups account with UTF-8 when you are composing a message, hence it complains that I am trying to send a message using UTF-8, which is not supported.

In that case, I need to change manually the text encoding to ISO-8859-1 every time I compose a message, as it's always set to UTF-8.

Considering that a lot of people here use Thunderbird, how did you manage to overcome that? Is there any .chs file for UTF-8 that could be used? Any comments will be appreciated.

I've always had problems with charset tranlations, and I am still not anywhere near being an expert. So, I chickened out back in 2014 and based my ~.xlat file on a post by Bj”rn Felton of his file, in this echo back in 2010.

I intend to create a .zip of the ~.xlat file for you. It will also have an extra .chs file I threw into my xlat directory that I pinched from Golded's collection. The .zip file will arrive, hopefully, at your node without any netmail as my netmail editor has /problems/ doing file attaches.

    Watch your insecure inbound... :)

    Cheers,
    Paul.

Bugger. It should be Felten, and only Felten. Oops. Sorry Bj”rn.

Mmm... in my excitement I forgot to tell you why I was sending the .zip file. Another 'oops'. The enclosed ~.xlat file is currently serving on my Linux node and seems to allow for UTF-8 posts, and also likes to post other ASCII *replies* correctly, so, I thought it was worthy of passing on.

Ah, I noticed while browsing the nodelist in Radius that you don't have a CM node. No problems. Radius will wait till your on-line time to attempt polling...

    Cheers,
    Paul.

    Hi, Flavio Bessa!
    I read your message from 19.04.2017 13:25

Mozilla Thunderbird automatically changes the letter's charset to UTF-8
if even one character in the text you had copypasted doesn't belong to
the ASCII charset that set in Options. When you copy texts from the
Internet (UTF-8 as a rule) you should filter it to ASCII.

Another issue are some plugins - they can support only ASCII and distort symbols from other languages.

    Bye, Flavio!

You need a few lines to your .xlat file:

    read UTF-8 utf-8 utf_utf.chs
    readalias utf_8 utf-8

    post utf-8 UTF-8 utf_utf.chs
    postalias utf_8 utf-8

and the chs file which you can get from:
