From Nicholas Boel@1:154/10 to All on Sun Mar 12 09:12:42 2017
    Hello All,

A couple of questions maybe some of the long-time JamNNTPd users can provide answers to..

    [Question/Situation #1]

Is there a way to post using multiple names on the same account? For example, I/we use aliases on some othernets, and rather than setting up a completely new account it would be nice to be able to switch between usernames easily.

Golded has such a feature where you can do something like so:

    GROUP A
    USERNAME Nicholas Boel
    ENDGROUP

    GROUP B
    USERNAME MyNickname
    ENDGROUP

I noticed you can use a comma in your jamnntpd.users file to separate names, but I believe that is only for receiving and possibly sending netmail, and further comments in that file seem to not allow for this as it only posts with the first user specified:

    # When a user posts a message, the first realname is used as the from name
    # unless it contains wildcards. If the first realname contains wildcards or
    # if no realnames are supplied, the from name is taken from the From: header
    # line of the posted message.

    [Question/Situation #2]

Is there any way to sort or somewhat "fix" or work around the seriously broken threading in Fidonet?

At times I'll have to scroll back 100s of messages to find a broken thread with one reply to it. It would be nice if somehow you could combine all matching subjects into one thread, but since I've always heard the gripes about threading in Fidonet, I should probably assume that this isn't possible?

That said, It may just be easier to disable threading altogether and just read them as they're received. After using JamNNTPd for a bit now I'm realizing all the complaints about broken threading in Fidonet is not just a myth! Yikes!

If you dont set the realname field in jamnntpd.users file at all, you can post by whatever name you set into your news client.

In this case you cannot use netmail. :(

I dont know for sure but I think jamnntpd follows the reply linking of the jam base?

Running "hpt link -j" would be the best thing to do..

    That's a bummer.

I'm sure it does, and it does it fine. It's the broken threading of other software that makes you have to search more than necessary for a new post.

I almost wish there was a switch to disable threading and just list the messages in order like Golded does. At least then all your new messages would be in line and at the end of the list.

Running "hpt link -j" would be the best thing to do..

I run "hpt link" here, I'll give the -j switch a try but it probably won't matter much. It's not a fault of jamnntpd itself.

For example, I see well over 30 threads all named "Illegitimate President", some with "Re:" and some without. Also a bunch more where the "t" in President was removed.

I get that with my other Thunderbird, just by tweaking an icon on one of the columns... oops, I forgotten which but I think it's the left-most column header icon. YMMV. :)

    Cheers,

what news reader are you using? in t-bird, you simply click the zigzag icon in the message list... mine is on the left of the list... unclicking it puts all the posts is arrival order which is how i normally read fidonet areas anyway...

That did the trick. Thanks. I don't suppose there's a way to set that to all instead of having to click it every time you change newsgroups?

Either way, it does indeed help a bunch regardless.

nope... that's a client side option... just like the last read pointers... the whole thing is backwards from bbses...

Actually, clicking that setting for the newsgroup after you mentioned it, it seems to remember that setting in the future. After reopening Thunderbird and arriving on this newsgroup as well as others I disabled threading on, threading wasn't shown. Impressive!

Been tinkering with it a little more this week, and besides the fact that I can choose (and set per area or group) what name I want to post with with Golded, it seems this method fixes a few other issues I had with Golded that are more important at this time. :)
