From Michiel van der Vlist@2:280/5555 to All on Sun Jan 21 13:12:47 2018
    Hello All,

Mozilla pushed FireFox Quantum (57.0.3) down the throat of my laptop. Now the IPvFox add-on does not work anymore.

Mozilla suggests BongoKarl101010 as a replacement. That lists the adresses, but only after pushing the butten, it does not show a blu 6/ read 4 like IPvFpx does... Not what I want.

    Suggestions?

    Cheers, Michiel

Mozilla has made several dumb decisions the last year and lost several users because of that. They've broken so much things on purpose that it doesn't matter much that Quantum is faster. When they enforced PulseAudio fr linux I ditched Firefox as main browser.

Hmm... Interesting but I was not looking for a replacement for Firefox, just for a replacement for the IPvFox add-on...

it doesn't matter much that Quantum is faster. When they enforced PulseAudio fr linux I ditched Firefox as main browser.

Until now, I considered FireFox the least of the available evils. It still supports XP, but it has a tendency to freeze up after watching many videos. :-(

Well, all this webext stuff is flawed by design, so I suggest you to install either Firefox 52 ESR (still supported branch, all xul addons will work), Pale Moon (alternative to classic FF, some addons may not work) or Basilisk (alternative to 52 ESR, in beta).

This should be last resort. I don't recommend Chrome for everyday browsing activities because of it's being such a resource hog and strong ties with Google.

They broke addons in unrecoverable way, so there's not much difference from Chrome now, unless you will stick to 52 ESR.

    MvdV> :-(

If it is 32-bit XP, the problem is "out of memory", because of entire user space gets limited to 2GB by default (could be extended with /3GB switch). And HTML5 content, such as videos, cause major memory leaks in FF-based browsers.

Thank you so much! I looked at the beginning of January and found only an assembly two years ago.

    Many thanks again!!!

My main system is still running 52.5.3. (ESR). It is my laptop running Win7 that got Firefox Quantum. I do not use that laptop very much, so I think I will not dump it right away. I will give it a chance. Maybe just maybe I will see it as an improvement. You never know.

Bad idea, you will lose security updates this way. Use 52 ESR for now instead, it will receive updates by May 2018 at least.
