Sadly I agree 100% with this. Everything seems like its being "dumbed down" and not necessarily limited to technology either.

Remember how Google started off as "do no evil", and now they morphed into the exact same fascist mega-corporation they despised.

I wonder if the long term use and hooks the main stream internet is offering by the mega corps is nothing more than their tool for international enslavement via mass consumer psycology.

    WTF is that shite???

"5. DO NOT post any offensive language or statements - NO PROFANITY."

So much for the profanity rule right? Do as I say not as I do?

the first thing i think is that you should be using your real name here... the FROM field or at least in your signature ;)

Or what will happen? The moderator will get upset? Feed cut? Bwahahahahaa....

I think I will start a campaign to motivate everyone to stop using dead echoes or better yet maybe just gate this one to Usenet so it gets the traffic and attention the moderator apparently so desperately craves.

Its real easy to be the big tough guy behind the keyboard and I suppose the appeal of being petty and vindictive is why you chose to be moderator.

Thats okay, I understand very well :)

I seriously doubt there is any way to steer the "mega corps" away from profits and data mining, other than convincing people to stop using the Internet altogether. Unfortunately as long as there is appeal to the lowest common denominator that will never happen.

Look at how marketing now dictates the appearance and functionality of operating systems and websites.

LOL. Because you're a fake. A phony. A fraud. A total see-through excuse for a human being, and thats treading lightly. Lets just say that your life is Fido and you can't even manage that properly. Quite the legacy you'll be leaving behind when you finally bite the big one... before I do, I may add.

Any respect I had for you changed the moment you presented yourself as a know-it-all flaming homo, complete with the all-lowercase bullshit... as if thats supposed to impress me or make me bow to your infinite wisdom.

Whining and crying incessantly about shit either we already understand, we are capable of googling, or we generally just don't care to be ranted to about.

Name for me anyone who really admires or respects you, other than the Z1C who has a big strap-on phallic object placed straight up your ass. Name for me anyone in FTSC who respects your accomplishments. Then name for me one person who thanks you for auto-posting rules in dead echoes every month.

Mentioning my daughter is a straw-man reply in much the same way people bring up Hitler in Usenet when they've "lost their case"... so again, go fuck yourself, your rules, your dead son, all of your shit that encompasses who you are as a person. Its all bullshit and a very sad act that I can see through.

Sadly I agree 100% with this. Everything seems like its being "dumbed down" and not necessarily limited to technology either.

    I strongly disagree.
There was never more extremely valuable and good information available!

There are many scientific papers available for free download.
The world is more global then ever!
You can subscribe to many newspapers (including ones from outside your country)
to check what they argue and what their arguments are.
You can then compare if your views may have missed some vital points, and if so, you can adapt your views.

What is correct is that there is also more bullshit and manipulation on the Internet today.
You need to be trained to see though it.

The Internet is just a tool for communication.
You need to select with WHOM you communicate.
But you have much more possibilities to communicate with good people all around
    the globe.

    Just my 2 cents.

While that may be true, the information available is in most cases no different than one can (and have) obtained from libraries.

Remember the early to mid 90's... The world did not suddenly morph into some magical utopia when the Internet became popular, nor would the "information superhighway" bring us together or improve our social standings with
eachother by removing those geographical limits. In fact, I think the
opposite happened. People by and large just stare off into their
smartphones, or are addicted to Facebook, or seem compelled to share pictures of what theyre about to have for supper. Cybercrime is more advanced and prevailent than ever nowadays.

I realise its not all doom and gloom and there are a few good websites out there, but IMO western society's social skillset and intelligence level did not improve whatsoever by the Internet. Computer operating system GUI's these days appear to be now designed for the lowest common denominator. Windows 10, Gnome 3, etc. The ribbon in Microsoft Office? What a piece of crap.

Since the Internet became popular, we have yet to see some really truly great science or scientists evolve; using the tools and information available on the Internet to advance the next "great thing".

Some exceptions of course. Take that project which uses the idle processing power of a volunteer's desktop computer to participate in a mass distributed-computing effort to decode images from space. Bitcoin currency is possibly another. Both of those have some real potential.

While that may be true, the information available is in most cases no different than one can (and have) obtained from libraries.

    There are major differences.
Access got much easier and faster.
(you do not need to wait for somebody to finance and write a book, but you have
    often access to the papers).

You have much easier access to geographically diverse information.

    Etc.

Remember the early to mid 90's... The world did not suddenly morph
into some magical utopia when the Internet became popular, nor would
the "information superhighway" bring us together or improve our social standings with eachother by removing those geographical limits.

It depends on how technology is used.
But the fact remains that it is now much quicker and easier to communicate with
    people from other continents, etc.

Sure ... you could always just give them a call.
But it cost you an arm and a leg, now you can make a SIP, Skype, Trigema, whatever call with or without video.

In fact, I think the opposite happened. People by and large just stare
off into their smartphones, or are addicted to Facebook, or seem
compelled to share pictures of what theyre about to have for supper. Cybercrime is more advanced and prevailent than ever nowadays.

There we are again, that it depends on how technology is used.
And it also requires more education on the user side.
Eg. checking the crowd sizes for inauguration and to fact check "fake news"

I realise its not all doom and gloom and there are a few good websites
out there, but IMO western society's social skillset and intelligence level did not improve whatsoever by the Internet.

That is why education is important.
People need to LEARN to use the tools that are already widely available.

The Internet is just a tool for communication.
You need to select with WHOM you communicate.
I really wish I could share the same sentiments, truth is, the
