Tear and origin lines are not needed in netmail. Some BBSs add them and they don't hurt anything, but they are not needed.

origin lines are an echomail thing...

netmail contains the originating system's address in the header... echomail doesn't because it is a broadcast medium and the header address changes with each system that forwards the echomail to other systems...

because mystic insists on shoving one in there even if one already exists... it reminds me of the old tear line wars back in the day...

if you look at the original post's control lines, you might also find a mystic PID line, too... even if the PID spec says to use PID/TID *or* tear line but not both for the same program...

Is that true of tear lines also?

Netmail that I send from here doesn't include a tear or origin line. Should netmail have a tear line?

Tear and origin line in netmail are just text. You can send netmail with or without. ;)

You can add one, if you like. AFAIK tear lines (and origin lines) are undefind for Netmail and are just text.

That's true, one of the BBSs I run here adds a tear and origin line. That's not
a problem as far as I know although I do sometimes get comments about that. :)

I wonder from a technical point of view if they are needed for any reason, or if they serve any kind of function.

No technical reason. They should not harm any program either. But you never know.. :)
