• still used today?

In the pkt and msg headers, the fields cost and baud... are they still used anywhere? I know in a past coversation -- Nick shared with me costing can get complex - but do people still use costing, and why does it matter to the msg, and to the receiving system(s)?

No: these should be set to zero when creating the packet and not used when processing it.

    costing,

    probably not...

and why does it matter to the msg, and to the receiving system(s)?

it doesn't matter to the receiving system... it matters to the sending system... storing this information in the message or packet allowed the system to have it handy when rescanning the outbound to qualify mail... the problem was that it wasn't zeroed out when the packet was sent... one reason for not zeroing it out was if the packet didn't go after being qualified, that information was lost...

in this day in time, cost is generally always zero...
