I agree, but from what DM said Synch will convert IF your user # is
1, which I take it you are. My issue that I am having right now is
using SMBUTIL to post a message using those codes and even when I
use the fix that DM said to use, the -e1 option, still not working correctly.

i think what is being missed is that the conversion of the @-codes is
not done at posting time but at reading time when the message is
displayed to each user... what you are looking for is that the @-codes
are interpreted at posting time and the results of the interpretation
are posted instead of the actual @-codes... opposite sides of the same fence...

At the time of the posting using SMBUTIL, the message should have been converted when I read it in the specific echo after it was uploaded when I telnet into the board.

maybe you might have to write a conversion tool to convert the codes before posting as you are desiring?? basically a template interpreter
that generates the finalized text file that smbutil will post...

According to Rob, the -e1 switch will do the conversion being it stipulates that I am the sysop. No other user has that option.

that's what i'm saying seems to be misunderstood... if #1 posts the message then everyone will see the @-codes converted /when they view
the message/... in other words, the raw message contents still contain
the @-codes and not the results which are only translated into place
    when the message is viewed...

Yes, everyone should see the converted message and you are also correct the raw txt message contains the @-codes.

maybe you might have to write a conversion tool to convert the
codes before posting as you are desiring?? basically a template interpreter that generates the finalized text file that smbutil

According to Rob, the -e1 switch will do the conversion being it stipulates that I am the sysop. No other user has that option.

i haven't been able to read it like that... have you been able to post your test message to a local area and have the code converted as you desire? if yes, then go look at the raw message file for that area and
see if the actual @-codes are still in the message or if they have been converted... i'm willing to bet a beer that the @-codes are still in
the raw message and that sync does the conversion/translation when the message is viewed... that's just the way i've been understanding everything i've been reading in this topic...

He just added the explaination to the wiki regarding the -e1 option the other evening after I brought this to his attention. Synch will only translate the raw @-codes for user #1 and no other. Using SMBUTIL, according to Rob, I should be able to import a message into any sub I am doing now for NHL rules and the bbs ad. Neither of those use the @-codes and everything works out wonderful. Now, to import a message using the @-codes, I must tell SMBUTIL I am #1 (the -e1 option). This is what is not working. I want to try one more thing with with the header and see if that works.

i can also understand why posting it in other message areas to appear
on other bbses won't work since their user#1 is different than the one
on your system... that also points to the translation being done at
view time... you'll probably see the same results if you post it to a dovenet area... it might read fine on your system since your user#1
posted it but on everyone else's system it would show the @-codes...

Not according to Rob. Translation is done by SMBUTIL and will post the information that corresponds with each partiular @-code.

as above, i think what you are trying to do will end up with a template containing the @-codes which will be processed by a tool which will
output a text file with the codes translated to the info you desire and that text file will then be posted by your posting tool...

Which is exactly what SMBUTIL is supposed to do... :)

    Thanks for the input.

There is a difference whereas the SenderExt is not apppearing on the first post.

That is the root cause of the problem. I've committed a fix to
smbutil.c (rev 1.106), so if you can either update your source from CVS and rebuild or download tomorrow morning's snapshot/daily build, that smbutil.exe should include the fix.

Thanks so much DM.... appreciate all your effort. I feel like I found a bug.. lol!!
