• Echomail real name test

From Sebastien Ruel@1:229/1017 to All on Sat Jan 2 08:37:57 2021
    Hi All,
thanks for replying to my previous test.

Now i've set the 'use real name' flag for all the Fidonet msg areas on my bbs.

After all these years, i'm glad (and suprised) that Fidonet is still alive!

    Happy new year,
    Sebastien (aka TNT).

    Hi Tommy,
Indeed thats strange this kludge. It does not appear on my original message. I'm using SBBS with mostly the default values, so I dont know where this get added... i'll investigate.
    Tnx for the feedback.

    Sebastien.

    If I'm not mistaken..

That kludge is for avatar support. Avatar's have been working for some time in DOVE-Net and I suppose QWK networked areas. I think that kludge is, or will be used for avatar support in FTN areas.

What is the purpose of this BBSID kludge?

It helps to tie a BBS's FidoNet identities (AKAs) together with their QWK BBS-ID. For Synchronet, this helps with the display of user avatars in message headers. It could be used for other purposes in the future.

It's added by SBBSecho (v3.12+) during export.

Right. And the avatars already worked in FTN areas, so long as the SYNCDATA echo is also being imported via FTN on that BBS. However, most Synchronet sysops carry SYNCDATA via DOVE-Net (QWKnet) and therefore don't have all the associated BBS's FTN AKAs (and their published FTN address would be Vertrauen's). The "BBSID" kludge solves this issue with the avatar distribution system.
