We Do Need Sysop Only Echos
Why is it some folks balk at the idea of "sysop only" echo
areas?
Do they think Sysops concoct evil plans therein?
I don't think so.
There are both personal and technical purposes for these type
areas.
Take for example an episode that occur ed years ago in the
Z1_RECON echo. This example crosses both areas mentioned
above.
One angry Regional Coordinator posted the contents of that
private area publicly, and unfortunately a number of regional
coordinators' home phone numbers and addresses were included in
the lot. We like to think that no one would ever use that type
information to cause grief to another human being but sadly that
is not the case.
While that kind of information may not posted in other
Sysop-only echos like FIDO_SYSOP or FN_SYSOP, some of us still
would like to have those areas marked as sysop-only. Why? My
guess is it is because sysops do like to congregate in areas
such as these, and enjoy the ability to speak their minds
without being quoted "elsewhere" by some users.
Never happens you say? Take a look in the FIDONEWS message
echo.. There the moderator and editor of Fidonews ignores such
posts from other sysop echos and in ignoring them perhaps even
encourages them by one of his own users.
