I paid $114 for the little server off of eBay. So far so good. I was able
to successfully move my current MBSE installation over to the new server. Sometime this weekend, I'll do a final backup of the current BBS, shut down that computer, and restore that backup on the server and fire that system
up. The CPU heatsink fan has bearing rattle pretty badly but I called the place I bought it from and they're sending me a CPU heatsink/fan combo for free. The server has a 100% 1-year warranty. Very friendly people. So
after that's replaced, should have a very long life.

    The server has a quad-core Xeon X3430 processor, 8GB RAM, 2 x 250GB SATA
hard drives, and it did come with Windows 7 Pro on it but I of course
switched that over to Slackware 64 Linux. ;)

That's neat. This system has been running well for a while now so I probably won't upgrade it too soon :)

Yes, this one also came with Windows installed, so I cleaned that off and put Ubuntu on it. One of these days I'll move to a newer Ubuntu and do the whole backup thing.. one of these days....

I'd say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" but we all know how well I'd
    adhere to my own advice...

But the final system move was successful. Thanks to rdiff-backup, it went better than I thought. I just had to recompile MBSE and DOSemu so they'd
    have 64-bit binaries.

I get kinda nervous about upgrading. joe was somehow changed to where MBSE
and it don't get along anymore so if there's any sort of upgrade, I have to reinstall the last working version. I need to blacklist joe in slackpkg's setup (Slackware's system updater).

But so far, so good. A replacement CPU heatsink/fan will be arriving
sometime tomorrow afternoon so that will take care of the one major problem that the server has. The next thing I need to do is find an appropriate
SCSI card for it so I can use this Dell Powervault 100T DDS-4 external tape drive I have.

One thing at a time, right? :D

It's unfortunate that sometimes upgrades break existing packages, but we know it happens.. also unfortunately 'from experience'. <g>
