I thought I'd leverage this echo to see what people are doing with DOS and DOS environments these days.

I run my BBS in 32-bit Windows, and have leveraged the DOSVDM in it to run my old BBS QWK environment. Some programs seem choppy, especially the one app I use all the time in DOS - Qedit.

I started using DOSBox-SVN Daum, a 64-bit DOS port, under 64 bit Windows 10. With it, I get telnet to comm-port redirection, a full-screen font that renders 80x24 text nicely on a wide screen, and lets me run my old COMM programs well; there's a weird issue with uploads I can't solve. But, it's nice to emulate the environment I'm so comfortable with.

I don't use it all the time, but I have MS-DOS 6.22, Qemm, Desqview, Thedraw/Aciddraw installed into a 256Mb USB flash drive.

It get's used mainly to edit & view ansi files, or for IO cards that only have DOS firmware update software. (Ie: Old LSI Raid cards
that are still worth having, when put into JBOD mode)

I would like to find a build of Dosbox that does not have the "caching" problem, in that, if the host OS manipulates the file system, the Dosbox session should see it.

Agreed, that's the most aggravating thing about using a term program outside of DOSBOX to transfer packets. That, or solve the download/upload issues. Files transfer OK, but QWK packets are corrupted. REP packets don't make it to the other end.

I did some poking around and found out that the Windows command line FTP can take a script file. I have a Windows batch file that runs a ftp session to download a QWK packet, then fires up DOSBOX or vDOS. Both have MM in their autoexec.txt files, so it goes straight into the emulator. The last step in the batch file will upload the .REP packet. we'll see how it goes later today.

I have it spawn another DOS session a few times a day that loads up the NDIS packet driver for the onboard ethernet and runs the DOS binkd to grab mail in the background. It's only one node at the moment but I do have the hardware to do up a second if I get any free time. :)

You could call "rescan" before you do anything and that would solve that issue.
It's not automagic but it's a step closer to what you're looking for.

You can setup bbs via internet (is this telnet protocol?) and invite Us there.

Is this connected to the WildWildWeb? If so, is it taking a beating from all
of the sweeps & malformed (not sure what to call it) traffic?

I am working on a similiar system using RLFossil & pktdrivers but not sure if it will handle the nonsensical traffic.
