5 December 1992 - FIRST SMS SPREADS HOLIDAY CHEER: At an office holiday
party, Vodafone CEO Richard Jarvis checks his cell phone to see the
words 'MERRY CHRISTMAS.' The cheery message, composed on a PC keyboard
by engineer Neil Papworth, reached Jarvis via a new technology called
short message service (SMS). In coming decades, 'texting' will change
how we communicate, in both good and bad ways.

Title: Send A Message Fortune Cookies
    Categories: Five, Cookies, Novelties
    Yield: 18 servings

    1/2 c Almond flour; (ab 2 1/3 oz)
    1/2 c Sugar
    1 ts Vanilla extract
    2 lg Egg whites

Lightly spoon flour into a dry measuring cup; level with
a knife. Combine flour and remaining ingredients in a
food processor; process until blended. Scrape batter
into a bowl using a rubber spatula; cover and chill 1
    hour.

    Set oven @ 400ºF/205ºC.

Cover 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Draw 3
(3") circles on paper. Turn paper over; secure with
masking tape. Spoon 1 teaspoon batter into center of
each of the 3 drawn circles; spread evenly to fill
circle. Bake one sheet at 400° for 5 minutes or until
the cookies are brown just around the edges. Remove from
the oven. Working quickly, loosen edges of cookies with
    a spatula, and turn over.

Lay the handle of a wooden spoon and a prepared fortune
along the center of 1 cookie. Fold cookie over so the
edges meet over the spoon handle; press edges together.
Remove spoon. Gently pull the ends of the cookie down
over the rim of a small bowl (or jar); hold for a few
seconds or until set. Repeat procedure with remaining
    cookies.

Repeat procedure until all of the batter is used. Cool
cookies completely; store in an airtight container.

Yield: 18 cookies (serving size: 1 cookie)

These cookies are ideal for bake sales trying to promote
a cause; customize the fortune to suit the occasion.
Bake three cookies at a time so they'll be soft enough
    to shape.

Tuck your message into the cookie while shaping. If the
cookies become too brittle, return them to the oven for
    a few seconds to soften.

12 January 1992 - HAL 9000 BECOMES OPERATIONAL IN URBANA, ILLINOIS: HAL
9000 is a fictional artificial intelligence character and the main
antagonist in Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey series. First appearing
in the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL (Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer) is a sentient artificial general intelligence
computer that controls the systems of the Discovery One spacecraft and interacts with the ship's astronaut crew. While part of HAL's hardware
is shown toward the end of the film, he is mostly depicted as a camera
lens containing a red or yellow dot, with such units located throughout
the ship. HAL 9000 is voiced by Douglas Rain in the two feature film adaptations of the Space Odyssey series. HAL speaks in a soft, calm
voice and a conversational manner, in contrast to the crewmen, David
    Bowman and Frank Poole.

In the film, HAL became operational on 12 January 1992 at the HAL
Laboratories in Urbana, Illinois as production number 3. The activation
year was 1991 in earlier screenplays and changed to 1997 in Clarke's
novel written and released in conjunction with the movie. In addition to maintaining the Discovery One spacecraft systems during the interplanetary mission to Jupiter (or Saturn in the novel), HAL has been shown to be
capable of speech, speech recognition, facial recognition, natural
language processing, lip reading, art appreciation, interpreting
emotional behaviours, automated reasoning, spacecraft piloting and
    playing chess.
