    16 August 1841 - U.S. President John Tyler vetoes a bill which called
    for the re-establishment of the Second Bank of the United States.
    Enraged Whig Party members riot outside the White House in the most
    violent demonstration on White House grounds in U.S. history. Predating
    the 06 January 2021 Trump insurrection by some 180 years.

    MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

    Title: White House Garlic-Butter Steak
    Categories: Five, Beef, Vegetables, Sauces
    Yield: 2 servings

    2 tb Butter; softened, divided
    1 ts Minced fresh parsley
    1/2 ts Minced garlic
    1/4 ts Soy sauce
    3/4 lb Beef flat iron steak
    1/8 ts (ea) salt & pepper

    Mix 1 tablespoon butter with parsley, garlic and
    soy sauce.

    Sprinkle steak with salt & pepper. In a large skillet,
    heat remaining butter over medium heat. Add steak; cook
    until meat reaches desired doneness (for medium-rare,
    a thermometer should read 135+|F/57+|C; medium, 140+|F/
    60+|C; medium-well, 145+|F/63+|C), 4-7 minutes per side.

    Serve with garlic butter.

    This was President Warren G. Harding's favourite meat
    for breakfast.

    20 Januaary 1841 - HONG KONG ISLAND SIGNED OVER TO BRITAIN: A South
    China deep-water harbor, and island of about 3,000 residents, is ceded
    to the United Kingdom after its victory in the First Opium War. China
    will regain sovereignty in 1997.

    MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

    Title: Hong Kong Pork Stew
    Categories: Oriental, Pork, Herbs, Vegetables
    Yield: 6 Servings

    2 lb Boneless pork shoulder; in
    - 1/2" cubes
    1 ts Salt
    1/4 ts Ground ginger
    1/8 ts Pepper
    13 oz Can pineapple chunks
    1/4 c Firm packed brown sugar
    1 ts Chicken bouillon granules
    1/4 c Molasses
    1/4 c Vinegar
    2 tb Cornstarch
    16 oz Can sweet potatoes
    2 lg Tomatoes; in 8 wedges each
    1 lg Bell pepper; in 1" cubes

    Cut up meat. Place in crock pot and season with salt,
    ginger and pepper.

    Drain syrup from pineapple and add water to make 1 1/2
    cups. Reserve chunks. Add syrup to pork, stir in sugar,
    chicken bouillon, molasses and vinegar.

    Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours.

    Turn heat to high. Combine cornstarch and 1/4 cup cold
    water. Stir into pork mixture and blend well.

    Add sweet potatoes, tomatoes, pineapple chunks and green
    peppers. Simmer 20 mins. until thickened and vegetables
    are heated through.
