06 October 1945 - BLACKBALLED BILLY GOAT CURSES THE CUBS: Billy Sianis
and his pet goat are asked to leave game 4 of baseball’s World Series between home team Chicago Cubs and the Detroit Tigers because of the
goat’s odor. Outraged, Sianis allegedly declares, "Them Cubs, they ain't gonna win no more." Thus cursed, as some fans would come to believe,
the Cubs will lose the game, the series, and never play in a series
again until 2016, when they beat the Cleveland Indians 4 games to 3,
winning the World Series for the first time in 108 years, thus finally breaking the curse.

    Categories: Poultry, Breads, Herbs
    Yield: 4 Servings

1/2 c Biscuit mix; Bisquick, etc.
    3 tb Cornmeal
1 1/2 ts Fine chopped fresh rosemary
    +=OR=+
    1 ts Crushed dry rosemary
    1 ts Salt
    1 ts Sweet paprika
    1/4 ts Garlic powder
1/2 ts Fresh ground black pepper
4 tb Unsalted butter; in small
    - pieces
3 lb Chicken; in 8 to 10 pieces

Place a rack in the middle of the oven and set @
    375ºF/190ºC.

Place a paper bag inside another paper bag to reinforce
it. Then, in the inner paper bag combine the biscuit
mix, cornmeal, rosemary, salt, paprika, garlic powder
and pepper. (You may also use a food container with a
tightfitting lid rather than the bags.)

Spray the rack of a broiler pan with nonstick spray.

In a shallow microwave-safe bowl, melt butter in the
microwave on HIGH for about 1 minute. Working with a few
pieces at a time, dip the chicken in the melted butter.
Gently shake the chicken pieces and use your fingers to
remove excess butter, allowing it to drip back into the
    bowl.

Place the buttered chicken in the bag, or container,
    and gently shake to coat.

Shake off the excess coating from each piece, then place
the pieces on the broiler rack, so they are not touching.
Breasts and thighs should be bone-side down.

Bake, uncovered, for 1 hour until golden brown and skin
    is crisp.

Let the chicken rest 5 minutes before serving.

30 October 1945 - SHOE RATIONING ENDS: on this day in 1945, the U.S. government lifted a war-era rationing program on footwear that allowed consumers to buy only three pairs of shoes per year.

The limit on such purchases went into effect on Feb. 9, 1943, a little
more than a year after America entered World War II. It was initiated
by the Office of Price Administration (OPA), which was tasked with
controlling purchases of food, materials and products to ensure that
both the military and civilians had access to essential items and that
costs didn't skyrocket due to scarcity.

objectives, as defined by its charter, include maintaining international
peace and security, protecting human rights, delivering humanitarian
aid, promoting sustainable development, and upholding international law.
At its founding, the UN had 51 member states; as of 2023, it has 193 -
almost all of the world's sovereign states.

The organization's mission to preserve world peace was complicated in
its early decades due in part to Cold War tensions that existed between
the United States and Soviet Union and their respective allies. Its
mission has included the provision of primarily unarmed military
observers and lightly armed troops charged with primarily monitoring,
reporting and confidence-building roles. UN membership grew
significantly following widespread decolonization in the 1960s. Since
then, 80 former colonies have gained independence, including 11 trust territories that had been monitored by the Trusteeship Council. By the
1970s, the UN's budget for economic and social development programmes
vastly exceeded its spending on peacekeeping. After the end of the Cold
War in 1991, the UN shifted and expanded its field operations,
undertaking a wide variety of complex tasks.

    Hello Dave,

26 June 1945 - UNITED NATIONS CHARTER SIGNED BY 50 NATIONS IN SAN FRANCISCO : The UN was established after World War II with the aim of preventing future world wars, and succeeded the League of Nations, which was characterized as ineffective.

It was the brainchild of FDR, Stalin, and Churchill. Not sure
which of the three was scheduled to become the first President
of the World, but just imagine the outcome had their ultimate
    dream come true.

On 25 April 1945, 50 nations met in San Francisco, California for a conference and started drafting the UN Charter, which was adopted on 25 June 1945.

It's too bad FDR had passed away the year before and Churchill had
been voted out of office. Stalin would have walked right in as World
Prez and there would have been no Cold War for any of us to worry
    about.

The charter took effect on 24 October 1945, when the UN began operations.

Rather than an organization between nations, what is needed is an
organization representing the people of the world. But freedom for
everybody would be asking far too much for those who crave power.

    The organization's objectives, as defined by its charter, include maintaining international peace and security, protecting human rights, adelivering humanitarian id, promoting sustainable development, and upholding linternational aw. At its founding, the UN had 51 member states;
as of 2023, ait has 193 - lmost all of the world's sovereign states.

Between nations. People are the same the world over. And still
are unable to address their grievances toward their fellow man in
    any court.

The organization's mission to preserve world peace was complicated in
its early decades due in part to Cold War tensions that existed between the United States and Soviet Union and their respective allies.

FDR was dead. Churchill was out of power. Stalin was out of his own
mind. Expecting Truman to be the Policeman of the World was asking far
too much of him. Much better to turn everything over to General Ike.

    For Life,
    Lee

    14 August 1945 - TRUMAN ANNOUNCES JAPAN'S UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER:
President Harry Truman announces Japan's acceptance of Allied surrender
terms, and celebrations erupt across the US and around the world,
including in Manhattan's Times Square where a photographer captures one
very pucker-happy sailor and a nurse clad all in white.

On August 14, 1945, it was announced that Japan had surrendered
unconditionally to the Allies, effectively ending World War II. Since
then, both August 14 and August 15 have been known as "Victory Over
Japan Day," or simply "V-J Day." The term has also been used for
September 2, 1945, when Japan’s formal surrender took place aboard the
U.S.S. Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay. Coming several months after the surrender of Nazi Germany, Japan’s capitulation in the Pacific brought
six years of hostilities to a final and highly anticipated close.

    Title: Karaage (Japanese Fried Chicken)
    Categories: Poultry, Wine, Vegetables, Citrus
    Yield: 3 Servings

    1 1/2 ts Grated fresh ginger; w/its
    - juice
2 ts Grated or smashed garlic
    2 tb Dry sake
    3 tb Soy sauce
    2 ts Sugar
    4 Skin-on chicken thighs;
    - deboned, in 2" chunks
    Peanut oil; for frying
    1 c Potato starch (katakuriko)
    1/4 ts Fine sea salt
    1/2 ts Black pepper
    Lemon wedge; for serving
    Lettuce & cucumber slices;
    - for serving

In a shallow baking dish large enough to hold the
chicken, combine ginger, garlic, sake, soy sauce and
sugar. Toss chicken pieces in marinade to coat. Cover
and refrigerate for 24 to 48 hours.

Fill an aluminum or thin stainless steel pot (best for
quick temperature adjustments), with sides at least 5
inches tall, with about 3 inches of peanut oil. Heat the
oil to 350 degrees. Place several layers of newsprint or
paper towels on a sheet pan.

While the oil heats, place a wire rack over a second
sheet pan. In a bowl, combine potato starch, salt and
pepper. Remove one piece of chicken at a time from
marinade, and tuck in any jagged bits or skin as you
roll it in starch mixture to coat. Rest it on the rack.
    Repeat with all chicken pieces.

Gently shake off excess potato starch before cooking
each piece of chicken. Fry 3 or 4 pieces at a time,
keeping oil temperature around 325ºF/165ºC (temperature
will fall when you add chicken) and no lower than
300ºF/150ºC degrees. Fry for about 3 minutes, or until
golden. Remove from oil using a wire-mesh spoon or long
chopsticks, and cool on newsprint or paper towels.

When all the chicken has been fried once, increase the
oil’s temperature to 375ºF/190ºC. Fry chicken pieces a
second time, keeping the oil between 350 and 375
degrees, until the crust is deep golden brown, about 1
minute. Drain on newsprint or paper towels. This second
frying makes the coating stay extra crisp, even if you
    don’t serve it immediately.

Serve hot or at room temperature, with a lemon wedge,
and lettuce and cucumber slices for a cool, fresh
    contrast, if you like.
