    Hello Shawn!

I was thinking it would be laminate, but I'd try my hand
at carving through it and into the wood. Leaving some of
the ivory as accent. I'd probably turn it into the white
king or queen in a chess set I'm carving for a freind of
    mine.

    Sounds like a nice project.

As far as I know, piano keys have always been made with wood and
laminated with ivory and now plastic.

A carved king/queen would only have the white on one side.
Ideally, you might like two keys that you can place back to back
(each one cut thinner? ..or remove the white part from one key
and put it on the other?) so that you have the white on two
opposite sides for one chess piece?

I would have to get rid of the sofa bed first..

Amazing how much stuff we end up with isn't it? I got
rid of garbage bin loads of it plus trips to the dump and
I still have an insane amount of crap in both this
    apartment and my friends basement.

There was a period of time when I had accumulated hundreds of
pounds of magazines and newspapers in just a handful of years.
There's probably still even more stuff that I could "release" to
    the dump.

He's very hard to buy gifts for. Still wears clothes from the
50's that were his fathers because "What's wrong with them?"

Since he's a GM chess player I asked him one day if he would
like a hand carved set and he said he would. So I have done
a couple test peices out of scrap and the other week started
    on the pawns.

That would be perfect. I'd do the other white peices the way
I am with the rest, just one with the ivory as a special touch.

I used to read a ton of magazines and paperbacks. I'm not
reading as much as I used to as I forget my glasses and then I
have to have the font so large on the kindle that i'm constantly
    clicking the page. LOL
