    Hi All,
    ...Greets from my Telegram app!

    Running on NiMH here

Many parts of Ontario sustained high winds last night. My power went out at about 10p. I have a large 8x10 sliding glass door that was creaking and responding to the gusts. This morn all is much calmer but house cool at 12C. :( 3 small sticks of birch and some cardboard are currently consuming in the woodstove - will be good enough to heat up some water for coffee.

    Ciao!

As long as you get coffee. ;) We had some winds here too, but the power
cables to our building are underground so thankfully didn't lose that.
I thought we were gonna lose the living room windows at one point though
    but everything stayed in place.

    Hello Shawn!

As long as you get coffee. ;) We had some winds here
too, but the power cables to our building are
underground so thankfully didn't lose that.

The power feed to the house is also underground, but only from a
pole about 30m away. The rest of the power service is above
ground everywhere - and lots of potential trees that could
    interfere.

I thought we were gonna lose the living room windows at
one point though but everything stayed in place.

My 8x10 sliding glass door has sustained quite a few storms over
its 45 years. Not sure how much longer it will last. The next
largest window is 3'x3', and the other windows are smaller; they
    don't buckle a bit.

The side benefit with the stove (primarily for warming up some water for coffee) was that the main room temp climbed from 12C to almost 16C in about 1hr.

I have an old upright oak piano, never tuned for over 20 years and never played (primarily by me) for as long. Maybe easier to rip that apart for wood than to try an move it out of the house.

It probably would be easier yes. The trick to get rid of it is
to find someone to take it for free if they move it. That's how
    mom got rid of hers.

We have a cabin in the Lake Tahoe area, and have warmed it with a wood stove every winter for the past 35 years. I was surprised I could get it from 22 degrees F to 55 in the course of a half-day.

Sorry, too early for F to C conversion for the rest of the world. It's the first morning of Daylight Saving time and I'm on my first cup of coffee.

Easy estimate from F to C = subtract 30 from the temperature in degrees F, and then divide by 2. It's pretty close!

it. That's how mom got rid of hers.

The problem is that there seems to be no local market for these
beasts. Even one local church has THREE old uprights in
storage! So, even if I offered it up for free, there would be
    no takers in my neighborhood.

Another thing.. the piano was maneuvered into the house BEFORE
the front door and frame and walls were completed. We could go
through the front ground-floor door, up one flight of stairs and
straight through an internal wall (before all the 2x4's where
inserted) and reach the living room area. Now, it would be
nearly impossible to extract the piano via the front doorway.
One other way might be straight out the 8x10' sliding glass
door, but then there would be a 12 foot drop to worry about.

The sound board is interesting to look at though. When I played
it, I would often lift off the front panel so that I could watch
the hammers strike the strings. It sounded louder that way too.

The sound board could look cool as a piece of wall art.

Based on the non uniform colouring, the keys in my particular
piano appear to be genuine ivory too. :/ Perhaps I can
repurpose the keys into an art piece as way to honour the
    proboscidea that made its contribution.

Yeah... I'll probably strip it down, salvage what I think looks
interesting, smash and burn the rest.

I even have an old worn-out fold-out sofa bed. It's heavy as
hell. There's no way I can get that out of the house all by
myself either. That's another one I've imagined needs to be
    taken apart metal-piece by piece.

If it's genuine and you do decide to strip it down. Check
out some carvers and see if anyone is interested in carving
it? I would love a key to try my hand at carving it.

Sounds like either do that or put some plants on it. LOL

Ivory discolours as it ages.. so I'd say that mine has ivory. A
couple keys are chipped at the very extremities. Mind you, the
keys are ivory laminate. There is a 1/8" layer covering the
wood. The most you would be able to carve into that would be
grooves. Is that sufficient? I'd be happy to send you a key.

Too late. I've had OTHER things already settled on it for
years. I can't open the piano without finding a place to put
the stuff that sits on it somewhere else first. And.. to make it
worse, the steel couch is parked right in FRONT of it. (I had to
move it there - temporarily - to make room for the hospital bed
that I eventually acquired for my mom.) Then, the "temporarily"
became quite permanent. That was over 8 years now. :/

I've lived in apartments in my first 15 years of independent
life. The companies that I worked for covered moving expenses.
It was rather neat not to have to disassemble and reassemble my
Ikea furniture! I never left anything behind.

I would have to get rid of the sofa bed first before I can
tackle the piano decommissioning project. And there is "stuff"
piled high on the sofa bed now too. :/

I was thinking it would be laminate, but I'd try my hand at
carving through it and into the wood. Leaving some of the
ivory as accent. I'd probably turn it into the white king
or queen in a chess set I'm carving for a freind of mine.

Amazing how much stuff we end up with isn't it? I got rid
of garbage bin loads of it plus trips to the dump and I
still have an insane amount of crap in both this apartment
    and my friends basement.
