• CDs/DVDs deteriorating

CDs, I haven't had issues with, but a lot of store bought DVDs have
failed over the past 10 years. They have no visible defects, and TL>
cleaning them generally doesn't help. :(

Did the disc ever get exposed to extreme changes in the
temperature and moisture? Apparently the edges of those discs
expose the recorded layer. Humidity would be a killer.

No, they live inside, and humidity here is low much of the year.

    I feel your pain!

I haven't explored my really old DVD's yet, but my commercial CD
collection seems to be unaffected by deterioration. Among the very
first CDs I bought was Roxy Music - Avalon in 1982. My copy is
manufactured in Germany. It has outlasted 3 CD players over the years.

The plan is to produce lossless copies of my collection to gain the convenience
of searching for songs and creating playlists.

The added benefit would be a sort of "backup".

Might be wise to consider the same conversion strategy for the DVDs that you can still play?

Interestingly, I've never had any issues with CDs, just DVDs for some reason. In both cases, I'm talking about commercially pressed discs bought through normal retail stores.

Suffice to say there are ways and means to achieve an equivalent result. :)

But it is much more fun to generate one's own video files. :)

Maybe the stock was contaminated in transit or in storage before hitting the shops? Can you notice anything else like a common manufacturer for those discs?

I wouldn't be surprised that known compromised discs end up in those bargain bins in department stores.

Do your bad DVD purchases span a wide number of years? ..or are the bad ones specific to a narrow purchasing period and/or source?
