    You could also look at picking up a ZoomFloppy device. With that you can then use a 1541 drive or a SDF1001 drive to read and dump the disks into D64 format.
    When using the 1541 and 1571 it will read the disk using WARP mode wich is quite a bit faster than your standard 1541.

    Also the CBM drives encode the data differnetly on the disk than the PC controllers do so I would not expect a raw dd dump to work, but hey give it a try. It would not be the first time I was wrong...nor will it be the last thats for sure...
