TODAY = Family Day in ONT, NB, SASK, AL, and BC.

Interestingly, it *not* recognized by the federal gov't, so
    Canada Post is still operating.

Grocery stores are closed. LCBO and Beer Store, closed.

They're open as are most restaurants. Nice sunny day in my neck of the woods, lot of people out for walks & in the parks.

Tim Horton's is open every day, many of them 24 hrs a day but it would be an awfully expensive coffee and donut.

Timmy's is handy and convenient but I wouldn't go out of my way.

Their 24hr-ness is handy to arrange to meet friends there at any time. For a coffee and tea they are fine. But I wouldn't consider them as good as a proper restaurant.

Yeah, it's a snack stop. I am favourable to their boston creme and sour creme glazed donuts but I haven't stopped in there for more than a year.

When I am on the road I will sometimes stop at Timmy's and get a soup and sandwich. It is always good but it's a light lunch. It's not a resteraunt by any means. No burgers or steaks, just snacky stuff.

They're still not agreed across all provinces on when this holiday should be -- so if you're off work in one province & ghope to connect with family for a long weekend in another province, it'll only be possible if they're in one of the ones you named. . .

I have no problem with the holiday in principle, but it would be nice to enact it federally so as to have consistency. . . & give our hard-working posties a paid day off (yeah, I know I got to help pay for it, but I get my own paid day off, too, when I'm working FT anyhow)

It can feel a long unbroken stretch between New Year's Day & Easter, so a February holiday makes sense. . .

I never thought of the problem that way. Yeah,, it would would
be hard for families separated by provinces to get together if
    the holiday wasn't enacted country-wide.

It can feel a long unbroken stretch between New Year's Day
& Easter, so a February holiday makes sense. . .

I think that was part of the justification for establishing the
day in February. Prety much ever other month has at least one
    holiday, and February had none.

I disagree. He does not get paid, presumably, but a lot of those tasks are tasks that have to be done so I would not call them self-generated (like,
say, hobby activities), and they can be a lot of work, both mentally and physically.

Why do I need to support a female? Are you still at the "Daddy brings home the bacon" level? That's pre-historic.

The system is pretty straightforward. You become a stay-at-home mam (or dad, works that way too) and get paid. At the same time a person is hired with the qualifications but lacking the experience for that now temporary vacant employment. When the stay-at-home person returns to the job, the fill-in person has had the opportunity to get work-experience and stands a better chance of applying for a job ...

    Some people call it a win-win ...

Some companies in Canada do offer a maternity leave and
compensations. The gov't does too - for up to 6 months if I
recall, or even up to a year.

Paternity leave is also now a thing.

Here in Canada there are clever persons just fine with the
gov't supporting their predicaments as unwed/single parent, no-
    income, etc.

Some of the new dads or mams don't even bother returning to
their previous employer, and basically run with the money.

I was asked by a previous employee to keep her on the payroll
long enough so that she could qualify for the minimum 52 weeks
of employment when I bought a business in which she was
previously employed. She got her gov't-paid maternity leave,
so did her partner, and she never returned to work (either it
was her choice or simply a logistical matter after she had
moved to be closer to her mother). It wasn't a win-win for me
    at all.

Yeah.. perhaps that is needed to remove the sludge that your

Yes, that is a year now which can be taken by either parent or split
up between them, they don't get a year each.

The problem there are the maximums that Maternity leave pays which
is often far below what the person would earn working. It is a
percentage of your pay (I believe 55%) and there's an upper limit
($650 a week) which would really hurt highly paid people.
