• Issue installing

From Chad Adams@1:130/210 to All on Thu Nov 23 12:28:49 2017
I'm not sure what's up, but I extracted the latest BBBS version from the website. I run ubuntu server latest.

I had all the files and proper permissions. I have the intel version of the bbs, which is accurate.

When I try to run bcfg using ./bcfg with appropriate user permissions, it gives an error stating that file isn't found or directly doesn't exist?

    Did I not install properly?

You state using /bcfg? Isn't the executable that you have actually named ./bcfg4? When I load BBBS config here I use "./bcfg4 0".

Yea whatever the name is is what I used. Basically, all the Linux executables say no file
Or path found when you try to execute them on Ubuntu. I tried all of the executables. Bbbs bbbsd, bcfg file, etc.

I don't know what. I am not a newbie Linux user. I have ensured permissions were correct, both file and directory.
I redownloaded the file from bbbs website, same thing. Tried multiple times.

Maybe something is wrong with the build?

Grab the latest Ubuntu server and bbbs from bbbs website and simply unzip it and try running the executable.

The only other thing I can thing of is that I am running it in a VM, but I can't imagine why that would matter.

    Hello Chad,

    cadams@irc:/var/opt/bbbs$

Ok, you installed BBBS to the /var/opt/bbbs directory? Who owns the /var/opt/bbbs directory? It appears that you are running BBBS as user
"irc". At a command prompt do a "ls -l -d /var/opt/bbbs" to see the ownership
and current permissions of the directory where you have BBBS installed.

Here everything in /var/opt is owned by root. And here BBBS is run as user bbbs
and BBBS is installed at /home/bbbs and a "ls -l -d /home/bbbs" shows:

    drwxr-xr-x 58 bbbs bbbs 20480 Nov 23 23:00 /home/bbbs

Which shows that /home/bbbs is owned by group "bbbs" and user "bbbs" and drwxr-xr-x means:

"d" means the subject is a directory and not a file.

"rwx" means the directory's owner "bbbs" can list its contents, create new files within it, and descend into it.

"r-x" means members of the directory's group can list its contents and descend into it

"r-x" means other users can list the directory's contents and descend into it

    And a ls -l /home/bbbs/bcfg4 shows

    -rwxrwxr-x 1 bbbs bbbs 278528 Dec 13 2016 /home/bbbs/bcfg4

The first "-" means that it is a file and not a directory.

"r" means that user "bbbs" has read access

"w" means that user "bbbs" has write access

"x" means that user "bbbs" has execute access.

    Hello Chad,

Ok, you installed BBBS to the /var/opt/bbbs directory? Who owns the >>/var/opt/bbbs directory? It appears that you are running BBBS as user >>"irc". At a command prompt do a "ls -l -d /var/opt/bbbs" to see the >ownership
and current permissions of the directory where you have BBBS installed.

Here everything in /var/opt is owned by root. And here BBBS is run as user >bbbs
and BBBS is installed at /home/bbbs and a "ls -l -d /home/bbbs" shows:

    drwxr-xr-x 58 bbbs bbbs 20480 Nov 23 23:00 /home/bbbs

Which shows that /home/bbbs is owned by group "bbbs" and user "bbbs" and >>drwxr-xr-x means:

"d" means the subject is a directory and not a file.

"rwx" means the directory's owner "bbbs" can list its contents, create new >>files within it, and descend into it.

"r-x" means members of the directory's group can list its contents and descend
    into it

"r-x" means other users can list the directory's contents and descend into it >>
    And a ls -l /home/bbbs/bcfg4 shows

    -rwxrwxr-x 1 bbbs bbbs 278528 Dec 13 2016 /home/bbbs/bcfg4

The first "-" means that it is a file and not a directory.

"r" means that user "bbbs" has read access

"w" means that user "bbbs" has write access

"x" means that user "bbbs" has execute access.

You could try one of two things:

Try running bcfg4 with sudo, ie: "sudo ./bcfg4 0" (just as a test). If this works, then below would most likely apply.

Try copying the bbbs directory to /home/cadams and running these there without sudo and as owner cadams (again as a test). You may not be able to own/execute with other users besides root in your /var directory. In Jeff's post, he mentioned having the archive extracted in /var/opt, but he's actually executing
these files from /home/bbbs in which everything there is owned by bbbs:bbbs, if
    I read correctly.

I meant chmod. In fact, I changed the ownership and permissions to cadams and 777 , recursively.

    Sorry for the miscommunication

That should have said untarred, not untested. Autocorrect.

I'm starting to this this build is either bad, or doesn't work on ubuntu
(which I doubt since others have run it on Ubuntu, and Debian variants)

From Chad's post I concluded that he had installed BBBS to the /var/opt/bbbs directory. If that was the case it would have explained why he was having ownership/permission issues.

    In Jeff's post, he
mentioned having the archive extracted in /var/opt, but he's actually executin >these files from /home/bbbs in which everything there is owned by bbbs:bbbs, i
    I read correctly.

No, actually I installed BBBS here in the /home/bbbs directory. In part to to avoid any ownership issues since everything in BBBS's home directory is owned by the user "bbbs". With BBBS the only time root access might be required is when loading bbbsd so that it can bind to the necessary <1024 ports. And even that can be avoided through port mapping.

Fixed it - mark gave me what I needed.

    So I was missing /lib/led-Linux.so.2

Install libc6 libraries which included that library and it worked fine.

Might need to put that in the docs that that library is needed because the output doesn't really point to the right place.

    Thanks for the info mark!

    Hi Chad,

Also, I tried every other executable.
You can see they are listed.

    My two cents...

First, have you defined the variable $BBBSDIR with the path to your bbbs binaries?
Second, I assume the answer as yes but, are you sure that if your box is a 64bit linux, your bbbs bundle is 64bit too? If not, maybe you have to assure that your 64bit linux has installed the 32bit compatibility layer (and maybe you will have to add multiarch support too).

My extra coin is to validate that all is fine with your biinaries: try to stat,
file, ldd or strace over any of your binaries and review the output in order to
    catch problems, insatisfied dependencies, etc..

Good luck, and let us now... ;-)

The answer to all your questions is yes. It's 65 bit and etc.

I had a library missing that bbbs relies on. Bbbs doesn't give a very good error message so I found it by running file on the bbbs executable and seeing the library it needed. I installed the library, which is not default

I posted earlier and stated what I found.

When it tries to load the dynamic linker referenced in the executable's ELF header and can't find it you get the same "file not found" error as you would for any nonexistent file. By default 16.04 only installs 64bit and you must install the 32bit version in order to have a multilib system capable of executing both. The 64bit version of the linker is named ld-linux-x86-64.so.2

And it's not exactly specific to BBBS. All dynamically-linked 32bit programs require that you have the 32bit libraries installed. They can't talk to the 64bit ones at all.

Fixed it - mark gave me what I needed.

    So I was missing /lib/led-Linux.so.2

Install libc6 libraries which included that library and it worked fine.

Might need to put that in the docs that that library is needed because
the output doesn't really point to the right place.

    Thanks for the info mark!

I guess that's where I was pulling my hair. I read the docs and never found anything saying what libraries were needed to just get it to run.

I understand the message was from it looking for the executable. Not a big deal, but tat library is not default installed on Ubuntu server (maybe other flavors if Debian based) but without knowing I would never know.

Bbbs has good documentation for the most part but the install is lacking. It literally had no troubleshooting that I found and just assumes it installs fine. There are many packages of libraries out there that in current days
    might be needed.

Not bashing anything just giving BBbS some feedback. Do what you like. BBBS
is somewhat complicated and this is a tough issue if you don't know BBBS such as myself being a new user to it. And everyone on here didn't think of it either, or even know, becau
People asked about my permissions. I wrote at least 5 times permissions were right.

But it's all working. Just wanted to provide some feedback in maybe something that would help new users. Only reason I posted my experience.

And that's for Telling me about file which lead me to the issue.

I took basically the same steps with the exception of a different directory path (/home/bbs/bbbs/). And got the same result.

    /home/axisd/tmp $ ./bcfg4 0
    Bad command or file name
    /home/axisd/tmp $ ./bbbs
    Bad command or file name

    I did a "objdump -p /home/bbs/bbbs/bcfg4 | grep NEEDED" from a terminal window and got a response:

    NEEDED libpthread.so.0
    NEEDED libc.so.6

Which tells me that the BBBS executable needs or can't find the specified libraries.

A second thought was to check to verify that the executables were 32b or 64b executables. I used the command "file /home/bbs/bbbs/bcfg4". It turned out that
the files were actually 32b executables. And the OS here is 64b Ubuntu.

It should be noted that 64b Linux should be able to run a 32b executable. But in some cases the needed libraries do exist but can't be found.

This was with an Archlinux VM on an HP Proliant server with an Intel Xeon processor.

It should also be noted that I haven't used or tried to install those older releases of BBBS in some years. I initially installed the Win32 version of BBBS and then later moved over to the Lin64 version.
