In the French Pyrenees, the demolition of the first Airbus A380s started in December. The aircraft are disassembled by Tarmac Aerosave in Tarbes, so that the parts can be resold.

It concerns two A380s that flew for Singapore Airlines for ten years. After the expiry of the lease term, the owner, leasing company Dr.Peters, decided to dismantle the airplanes. Negotiations with British Airways and Iran Air on a resale had led to nothing.

Dr. Peters expects to be able to resell the parts of the A380s for 45 million dollars. For this, contracts have already been signed with various parties, according to a spokesperson for AeroTelegraph. In total, 92 percent of the weight must be reused.

Singapore Airlines has replaced five A380s in 2017 and 2018 with newer ones. In addition to the two that are being dismantled, two more are waiting for a new user and one has joined the charter company HiFly.

That barely fourteen years after the first flight A380s are demolished, is illustrative of the lack of success of the Superjumbo. Apart from the large user Emirates, no company is interested in the purchase of new machines.

Smaller aircraft such as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 are almost as fuel-efficient, but can be filled much more easily.
