• Perseverance rover to land on Mars tomorrow!

From Sonya Weasner@3:770/100 to All on Thu Feb 18 17:35:21 2021
The Perseverance rover will be landing on Mars tomorrow at 11:15 PST! This
is super exciting! Does anyone plan to watch the landing live?

One thing I think that is really neat is that there is a helicopter strapped
to the belly of the rover. That helicopter, Ingenuity, will attempt the
first powered flight on Mars (or any other planet!). Basically the Wright Brothers flight attempt but on the red planet! You can see a cool simulation of that here: https://mars.nasa.gov/technology/helicopter

I find these types of missions fascinating and it will be interesting to see
if the mission proves fruitful in finding habitability and testing oxygen production.

Keep your eyes on the skies,
    Sonya (l0nepinemall)

I plan to watch if I can catch it.

That'll be interesting. I don't know how much atmosphere there is on Mars, 1% of Earth's (maybe) so that helicopter has to be small and light, yet the propellers have to spin very fast. We'll see how it goes.. :)

I completely forgot about it. I had it scheduled as a reminder
in my iPod, but I forgot the iPod at home this morning.

I bet the fine martian dust will muck up the rotors very
quickly. There is no service station on mars to repairs things
    like that. :D

SO.. was the landing captured well? One of the pics post-
landing is just black and white. Isn't this multi-billion $
rover equipped with a colour cameras?

I think I noticed a recorded 2hr program of the event on YT.

I hope that dust is dry enough that it doesn't stick to anything.

I haven't had a look yet. I saw a headline that the landing was successful but haven't had a look yet.

Good stuff, I'll go check that out.

I just watched one of them. Apparently they had 3 different
"live" programs. I watched the one where they had a young lady
providing commentary and introducing different team members of
    the program.

There are a couple of things I wish they would have communicated
better. I liked the update of the speed or velocity of the
craft approaching the planet. But it would have been more
interesting if they had marked the moment when the "7 minutes of
terror" begins. I didn't get the sense of drama and excitment
from the high speed approach from 22km/s to 5km/s to 1km/s.

I also wondered what heck were they spending all their time
looking at on their screens. It would have been nice to see
those and some explanations. Some people were flipping through
paper copies of materials in books.

What was the deal with the blue-light bars across the tops of
the benches they were sitting behind?

I hope that dust is dry enough that it doesn't stick to anything.

Do they have contingency plans to clean the camera lenses from
the dust that will accumulate on them? The first images looked
    cloudy.

I believe it takes time for the pics and videos to process from Mars. So far there are a couple of photos taken from the rover. The first was black and white but that was just an engineering low-quality cam. It has a 4K camera
or something I believe to capture high-res stuff. They have since released a few more photos, as well as a photo of the descent on Mars. There should be
a video of the entire landing soon - it just takes a while for it to arrive from Mars (or so I have read). Fingers crossed we see some higher quality images and videos soon!!

I imagine it does take time for that info to get back here from Mars and all we have seen so far is the start.

I still haven't had time to check out these things. Just too many things ticking away at my time but I'm going to check it all out soonish.

Your timing will be good! Tomorrow there should be video of the rover
landing on the surface of Mars! Just read that a couple of hours ago. I believe it is at 11AM PST! :)
