• RE: Portability of Amiga

From DENNIS SMITH@1:120/228 to RENE LAEDERACH on Sun Jun 1 16:57:52 2003
    Hi!

I've had a pretty hot debate with another ex-Amigoid lifeform yesterday

    evening
about the portability of Amiga games to Linux, especially where we
    have the
source available somewhere, like Boulderdaesh - has anybody ever
    attempted
    it,
or is my idea just a pipe dream?

I down/led Boulderdaesh to AIAB WinUAE. It wouldn't install with
the NGInstaller. Script problem probably. What else. =:o Someday,
I'll try one of the older installers.

The rationale behind this is that AmigaOS4 will be something unix-like anyway,
and since so many people will be running Linux on some other platform
    (like
Intel, sparc or MIPS), we might have more games available, meanwhile
    giving
away an incentive to actually buy new Amiga hardware. Is it worth the advantage
if we want our platform to survive, or is it just another stopgap
    measure,
even if we know the Amiga as we knew it on the 68k side is dead?

I have heard the Frieden's talking about it too much on 'A1ge devs'
list. Hans doesn't like my AOL. Fine, I don't like him using Mozilla
on A1. No one says how they set that up.:-\

I can't answer any these questions, Rene. They're all kind of stepped
to the future. I'll wait to OS4 shows up before making any judgment.
    :)

    Dennis

    Regards,

    Rene

Sorry you lost your AIO job. :-\ I always looked forward to AIO for

I saw Mark's 'Just-Amiga' posting for an open AIO ML. That's good --
keeping in touch with the Amiga maniacs. =:0

I finally got my A1 to do internet. Another case of bad setup by
the Debian distro. There's a DSL/PPPoE selection on the KDE Desktop
to create the configure. Well, it didn't work. Read docs and HOWTOs
'till my eyes fell out for last ten days.8-[ Finally, got the DHCP --
DyanamicHostConnectionProtocal in the proper file. Jeez, what a trip!
I have no SSL setup yet. I'm on the KDE MLs, so I'll ask someone
    there about that.

I created a OS 3.9 Emergency-Disk in UAE. So, that looks really good.
Another snag revealed: the OS CD uses CacheCDFS which is SCSI. The
A1 is normal IDE. You can do SCSI emulation *IF* you know the magic
words; I didn't. I used the sytems CDFS to go around that. Works! :)

Will you run OS4 on your A4000? BlizzardPPC go on tour next month.

Depends. If you see how tools like wvdial work, it's not really difficult to get it going. Or for that, any decent semi-commercial distro like RedHat
    or SuSe.

Look for scandoublers or PicassoII or PicassoIV boards. Try
EBay. You're probably looking for secondhand, but try Centsible
    Software (1-800-640-6211 or http://www.centsible.com), Mr.
    Hardware (631-821-2364 or http://www.mrhardwarecomputers.com) or
    Software Hut (610-701-6301 or http://www.softhut.com).

Also, try Fido AmigaSale. It could use some traffic.

    Hello David,

I was thinking more of small (probably passive) adaptors. They may just route the appropriate pins from the Amiga's video connector to a VGA one, but perhaps there are resistors to drop the video signal voltages to VGA levels.

On an ECS Amiga that would let me run 'productivity mode', although a scan-doubler would be nice to let me see NTSC & PAL screens too.

I have a friend that went through one or two Picasso boards. I was impressed with his, but my only Zorro-equipped Amiga is in Britain.

I'm not sure whether the BBS I use carries that one. It's tricky to figure out which conference maps to which echo because of the way they're labelled.

Hey! That means a good thing! ;-)

I've been knocking my eyeballs out on this new patch. MorphOS butterfly
    icons anyone:

    Hang on: ^K R > /root/UAE/workbench/OS35/PowerIcons.readme ....

Short: NEW! 32bit PNG icons on your Amiga !!! (68K and MorphOS)
    Uploader: uni-dea@jumpy.it (Elena - www.elena-fractals.it)
    Author: uni-dea@jumpy.it (Elena - www.elena-fractals.it)
    Type: util/wb
Requires: AmigaOS 3.5/3.9, Hi/True Color Workbench
    Version: 1.0

    WHAT'S POWERICONS ??
    --------------------

In short: PowerIcons is a patch allowing you to use PNG icons (24 bit with or
without alpha channel) on your Amiga in a totally transparent and OS-friendly
    way!

Also, it performs transparency for default icons (ala Ghosty) and true color
mapping of standard Amiga icons (they can now be displayed in full quality
with their real colors and without palette-based remapping)
    <snip>

    PowerIcons if FREEWARE!
Pretending to make money from a community who's trying to survive like Amiga
    community is simply SAD.
PowerIcons is Copyright c 2003 Elena Novaretti
Any commercial usage of this archive (whole or partially) is FORBIDDEN.
PowerIcons may not be distributed without this accompanying README file.

    <snip>

    REQUIREMENTS
    ------------

All you need is AmigaOS 3.5 or 3.9 running an Hi/True Color Workbench,
no special library or extra file is required.
Please note that 8 bit screenmodes are NOT supported for obvious reasons!

A very fast CPU and GFX Board is STRONGLY recommended.

To fully enjoy PowerIcons you're suggested to use DefIcons and RAWBInfo
(even if not required): how to live without them ? ;-)

Oh, you need some nice PNG icons too, of course! (However, I included
some nice examples made by me in the ExampleIcons drawer)
    <snip>

    NOTE ABOUT MORPHOS VERSION
    --------------------------

A very fast PowerPC version of PowerIcons is included for exclusive usage
under MorphOS. Actually, the only people who may benefit from this version
are Workbench users under MorphOS emulation (typically MorphOS 0.4 for
Amiga PowerUP). DON'T try to launch the included PPC version (PowerIcons.elf)
if you don't have MorphOS: your system will crash.
