I used to have a book on IT careers a long time ago. It warned against going in to middle management-type roles. Mostly because when cuts come, those are the first to go and the company realizes that the company runs just as good without them. Over time, though, the company forgets that
and hires more middle management.

At ZDS we called that the "Chief to Indian ratio." When money is good, they added levels of middle management. More or less they had some mid level folk that had been around forever, and would fill the middle areas with them depending on their skill sets

I worked at a plastics manufacturing company and when I started they
had just promoted the lead accountant to the head of HR. This
person was a very good worker. After 14 years, she was still the
head of HR. In charge of all hiring and helping with employee
benefits for 4 plants in the US.

Not sure if she was the exception to the rule, but she really helped
employees in the company. She helped me numerous times and I
respected her. She never put rules into effect just to be a tyrant.

Just my opinion.

Correct, HR has been the dump for unproductive and moronic workers so they will not disturb the work. Seems to backfire since they ARE the managenment after all. This is why if you want to become a manager, be a moron.
