For over decade, i think, i have been trying to get the telegard
    domain away from squatters.
it was due to expire and i was watching it every day.
it expired and i had to wait 2 months.

just by chance i was going to renew my domains and then i saw it was up for grabs so i got it.

it's just an ugly placeholder now, but it'll be a place for people to get telegard bbs software and 3rdparty addons and utils.

i'll also make a turnkey option with the popular doorgames and net2bbs.
you can even run it as a door on your synchronet bbs.

This is the 3rd bbs related domain i secured. the other ones were mysticbbs.com (I had the guy give it to jack phlash) and usurper.info(easier to get because nobody was after .info domains back then) i gave that one to rick parrish.

It's such a pain in the ass with these squatters.

Last time I checked my domain it was supposedly worth $800 - $900 I doubt anyone would really pay that much for it.

... Always smile. It makes people wonder what you're up to.

    yeah that's all bullshit.

i've got some old ones that were supposed to be worth a lot, but i put them up for auction and nobody bought them. they'd rather get them when they expire.

if you have like food.X or health.X it's worth money. otherwise, it's not worth anything to anybody.

I usually just tell people try to get something short that makes sense,
don't worry about ".com" at the end... consider full length. There's
enough TLDs that it's easy enough to get something good.

If I ever get bbs.land setup, I've got 8 domains I'm planning on putting
    up as dyndns for sysops.

    autobothq.com
    bbs.army
bbs.io (currently at freedns.afraid.org for dyndns use)
    bbs.rocks
    bbsing.info
    decepticonhq.com
    getd.one
    uaint.us

Plan is to setup a dyndns API and use Digital Ocean's DNS services for it.

Wow! Glad you got it! Few years back a company I used to work for years ago was letting go of their old domain name, one I used to maintain as their webmaster for about 10 years ... just wanted it for posterity I guess. It was registered through Dotster, but as it was expiring Dotster sold it to a squatter before it even hit the market. Details of the domain show it was transferred and never actually expired. Pissed me off... I've let go of a few domains over the last 10-15 years, and every one this happened to. So be very glad you were able to grab the domain. I even had some domains I registered for my kids who have rather unique names, and I let them go with the notion I'd register them again as they were older. Same thing, the registrar sold them and now they're held by squatters. The names are literally useless to anyone else.

one thing i noticed is they dont release it when they say they will. this one was 2 months past expiration. i think this is the 2nd squatter that had it. maybe the registrar gives preference to squatters? i totally got it by chance. i was checking every day for weeks. it should have been open to grab but it was not.

Reminded me of an SNL sketch a few years ago regarding a fake commercial for
a financial firm. The announcer tells the viewers not to judge them by
their domain name. it was something like catvomitclownpenis.ass. Due to squatters that was the only domain that wasn't registered.

Most registrars will sit on a domain for awhile to give people a "grace period" to renew it. squatters often have a massive database of common words/phrases/etc and they just auto-purchase domains as soon as something comes up via api calls or whatever. The income from selling off domains and ad revenue from once popular domains they manage to register offsets the amount of work and registration costs for the thousands of domains that never amount to anything.

Every once in awhile they'll go through and get rid of domains that have no traffic, and have no interest in the 2nd-hand domain market.

They're horrible fucking people that should be dragged out into the street and shot.

yeah there's a grace period. this was over a month over it. more than what they themselves said.
