    If I would get the new C64, how would I go about getting legal BBS software since all that software is long gone now...

    I'm not sure to be honest, but Synchronet can support PETSCII and will emulate a C64 character set just fine so maybe you could look into that as an option. It works in both 40 and 80 character mode.
