    At least there should be a CHRS: kludge so editors have a decent chance to display it the right way. ;)

    Now I follow. I need to add an identifier to describe what character set is being used. What I didn't see is examples of where the identifier is inserted into the document. I have research ahead then. Is the author of the article, one Peter Krefting, still available at the email address listed in the article?

    Thanks for assisting me with this. I want everyone to be able to view my ads without seeing a jumble of characters. It bothers me too when someone posts a two-page ANSI that is nothing but a jumble on my screen.

    It's on the top of your message, with the other kludges (probably not visible in your reader). It's normally added by your editor, not "by hand".

    I very much doubt that. I don't see him in the pointlist. (You could ask his former fidonet boss: Bjorn Felten)

    So maybe ask you questions in the FTSC_PUBLIC echomail area, or probably even better to start in the CNET_BBS area, if it's possible to add this kludge line on outgoing messages?

    ?? Guess I need to figure out what a "kludge" is first.

    Helping me out with excellent suggestions. Although man's quest for knowledge would not exist if he was given all the answers, I welcome yours nonetheless. ;-)

    You must be a real fidonet newbie! ;-)

    I found this paragraph in this document: http://ftsc.org/docs/fsc-0068.001

    Control lines in general:
    ========================
    A control line is a line of text in the message's body (the
    nul-terminated text portion of a message following the binary header;
    see FTS-0001) ended by a carriage return. Some control lines are
    preceded by a ^a (control-a, ASCII character 1) and are sometimes
    referred to as "kludge lines." Kludge lines are normally not shown when displaying a message; the reading software will treat the initial ^a as
    meaning "not (normally) for human consumption."

    Which explains it a bit.

    If you want to know more about FidoNet Technology, http://ftsc.org/ has a lot of documentation! Maybe too much. ;)

    Bye, Wilfred.

    Sorta like a REM statement in BASIC, or ";" in an ARexx script. Just there for
    info, not to be executed? Will an ANSI creator like Tundradraw do this?

    Never had FidoNet the last time I ran a BBS in the '90's. Only local mutterings. So yeah, guilty as charged.

    No. Some kludge lines contain vital information. I purposely left the 2 on your
    message in the quotes above.
    For exampel the MSGID is important, and plays a role in dupe detection. The PID
    is there just for informational purposes, and could be considered a REMark. And the CHRS kludge is more than a remark too. Because it contains information the displaying editor/viewer can use to display the message correctly.

    By "fidonet", I meant FTN (Fidonet Technology Networks). But I think that wouldn't change your answer. ;)
