    Hello All,

So what's all going on in everyone's neck of the woods with this virus crap, besides the normal toilet paper and cleaning products of all types being scarce?

Shit basically hit the fan at the end of last week here. All K-12 schools are now closed, resorting to some online schoolwork stuff until Apr 6 (4 weeks). My
son had his middle school wrestling conference tournament cancelled yesterday. Along with WIAA (Athletics Association) passing down a bunch of stuff so that youth wrestling qualifiers and state will be postponed until further notice. All his practices are now cancelled until further notice. My daughter's cheer/tumbling gym is closed until further notice.

My kids are going to be bored AF for the next 4 weeks if the wife and I still have to go to work. For some reason, I have a feeling even if the gov't tells everyone to stay home, I'd still be stuck having to go to work anyway (construction) unless I didn't want a paycheck.

Things are getting way out of hand. Going out in public is creepier now than the day after 9-11. :(

    Regards,
    Nick

We're only closed for 2 weeks (for now). Kids are up and running on Google Classroom for the time being. There are no confirmed cases in either school, but they're closed out of caution and to keep the kids away from each other. We're going to be spending lots of time outdoors, as soon as this untimely rain storm passes.

My wife's company is closing their office to non-essential personnel. My company has "strongly encouraged" people to work from home, both for 2
    weeks.

My kids are going to be bored AF for the next 4 weeks if the wife and I still have to go to work. For some reason, I have a feeling even if the gov't tells everyone to stay home, I'd still be stuck having to go to

I feel for you - my wife had to explain to the facilities people that they'd need to come in, as her employer is a public site.

Things are getting way out of hand. Going out in public is creepier now than the day after 9-11. :(

Yeah, we stocked up on food and supplies this weekend, hoping not to have to go to the store for at least a week. We bought 4 rolls of toilet paper, not 128.

Stores were errily quiet, it's like shopping before a hurricane. No toilet paper, canned soup or hand sanitizer. Lots of bar soap and liquid soap, however.

I've got a Christmas present waiting for me - a bottle of Old Potrero, a
18th century style rye whisky from the Anchor Distillery in San Francisco.

    Greetings Nick,

I live in Portland OR and the state closed all schools and banned all gatherings over 250 people. I learned that this morning Costco is limiting entrance to 250 shoppers at a time, everyone else must line up outside which seems that crowd would be more than 250 people? Counterintuitive? I think
this has gotten way out of hand, protect the vulnerable people and leave everything else alone, I say. Thats my two cents anyhow..

Problem is the symptoms of the sickness are really bad and even if you're not at risk there's a good chance you'll need medical care. And our medical infrastructure can't handle a huge spike in cases all at once. We need to
drag this out for a while so hospitals can keep up.

The Sun came out here this afternoon so I went for a walk. There was a
younger person (not sure if it was a kid or a short adult) walking a dog,
about 20-30 yards ahead of me. I never got closer than that but, at some point, the dog stopped, they both looked back at me (they had been off and
on for a couple of blocks) and they both took off running.

With my sense of humor I was half-way tempted to take off after them! :D

That, so far, as been the extent of creepiness.

We've been taking our kids outside, going for walks in

It's pretty crazy. Pretty much all of the tech companies have enforced WFH,
and a lot of the other big companies have or at least have given the option now. All of the local schools are closed. A lot of restaurants, bars, and
other service driven businesses are really suffering, and some have already closed down or at least had to let people go. A lot of them have reduced
hours, or have switched to delivery only. Almost every event is cancelled or postponed. Of course, as mentioned, grocery delivery services are super
backed up, store shelves have been stripped of certain items (beyond the now totally memerific toilet paper crazy, I couldn't find any of the frozen
veggies I needed for a specific recipe yesterday.) On the plus side, if you do decide to go somewhere the traffic is a lot better and places tend to be less busy, so there's nice?

My girlfriend has been working for home for weeks now, I'm going to start, at least some days, starting tomorrow.

Things are getting way out of hand. Going out in public is creepier now than the day after 9-11. :(

Yeah, it's definitely pretty weird. I'd imagine it was worse in Seattle than most places in the country, but from what I'm hearing it's similar all over.

We make our own cleaning products so have lots. As for TP about 2
weeks before the whole virus shit started my brother in law went to
costco and I asked him to get us the big package. It will last us
    about a year.

I still have to go to work. For some reason, I have a feeling even if

Same here. However it's getting tough to make a dollar now. People
are in fact staying in (as there's no where to go everything is
closed) so there is a lot of reading being done in my cab. Gubment
says they will do something to help us poor folk pay the rent. <shrug>

American Capitalism is great if you're rich. Rich people aren't desperate for toilet paper or hand sanitizer. They also have no issues with health
insurance, and the government certainly has their back, considering
everything they're doing right now is focused on the stock market...which
only 20% of Americans can afford to invest in to begin with.

No, just a ball cap and jacket. Not even any sunglasses as the Sun had

may have wanted to put some distance between me and the dog since the dog seemed more interested in who was behind it than getting home.

That is a great idea. The gossips would not want to talk loud enough to be that far apart but at least they could use a phone. I am a little worried about my area because people are not good with respecting other's personal space. Some at work have started getting a little put off by others that
don't want them right in their faces, even right now with all that is going

No if this was communism we would still be silencing anyone who says there

From what I've seen, you might need to hit a few stores, but it's not IMPOSSIBLE to find or anything. We bought a pretty big pack right about the time the TP shortage crazy hit from a local grocery store, and just grabbed 4 more from a local drug store. I've seen it several places, though I've seen shelves completely wiped out much more often.

What kind of masks? From everything I've read they do very little to protect you from this. They're more beneficial for someone who is already sick, if anything.

What kind of masks? From everything I've read they do very little to protect you from this. They're more beneficial for someone who is
    already sick, if anything.

    N95 masks.

Even if its mostly protecting other people from getting sick from me, thats good enough because that matters too. I'm not just worried about myself, I'm worried about the spread of the virus. I've been in a big city in Korea in the past month with 14 cases in my neighborhood, so I have been close to it.

I also take care of a 77 year old with terminal cancer, and 82 year old with congestive heart failure when I am not traveling. If I were to get them sick it would easily kill them.

So I do plan to try to get some N95 masks if possible but I'd also enjoy the privilege of wiping my ass as needed too ;)

Fair enough. I wasn't thinking it from that perspective when I wrote that,
and I've been thinking about it more and more in general as this whole thing goes on. I suppose I was thinking more about quarantine - that is, you shouldn't need a mask, because you probably shouldn't be out at all, but
that's obviously not realistic as we still need to run misc. errands, re-supply, etc. I concede!

Of course, there's a stigma about walking around wearing a mask because everyone thinks you're either sick and dumb enough to be walking around in public, or you're not sick but you're dumb enough to think the mask will help you from getting sick. It's a no win situation! ;)

I had to run to the grocery store on Saturday. The paper good racks were barren. Entire sections of certain items were just empty. What should have been the busiest time of day for the store, felt more like about 11pm, there was hardly anyone there.

I went at 7AM, which is normally not their busiest time. Looked like the
after work masses, which is what I was trying to avoid. Part of the
problem is that the local grocery chain (2 stores here in town) decided to
cut back their hours sometime last year. So the folks who might have gone
even earlier than that (like me) were all waiting for them to open.

Something else dumb they've done over the past couple of years is
remodelling twice. The first time they got rid of some paper product and
soap choices in favor of having a whole double-wide aisle devoted to pet
food and products. The second time, they cut this back to half of a double-wide, made some aisles narrower, and made their produce and
    bakery area huge.

So, you can social distance great if all you are doing is buying produce
and cake. Meanwhile, there is only 1/4 of an aisle dedicated to all paper products (tissue, tp, paper towels), and one approx. 3ft x 18in shelf of
hand sanitizer... that is one single shelf and not a shelving unit. Soap products as a whole are cut down to less than 1/4 aisle.

Both paper and soap used to have at least one whole side of an aisle each.
They do have a larger selection of hair colour and feminine products than
then seemed to before... I notice this because it is in the same area as
the soap used to be and seems very well stocked.

This is not a small store, either. They are about the size of your usual wallmart, minus the auto area. It is Kroger, if you are familiar with
    those.

Nope (well, not as far as I know, but they worked in a different building nowhere near mine) but it certainly brings our management's call to not let everyone who was able to work from home when our governor first suggested we do WEEKS ago into an even harsher light. Blood may well be on their hands now.

I work for a government agency. Our governor is trying to paint a picture
of everything in our offices being fine, but most of us are not allowed to
WFH, even during this (I am lucky they are finally letting us).

Meanwhile, we have people who come to work sick all the time. As they are contract employees, I wish their managers would send them home but they
don't. One of them was telling me that he thinks he already had COVID 19
so he sees no reason to WFH now. I would like to thank him for coming in
    while feeling so bad. :(

wow. That sucks. Scares the hell out of me. I am working trying to keep six restaurants open and folks working so every time I get home I basically bathe all my belongings in Lysol and hop in the shower before
    I even talk to anyone.

Here's some additional details to make it more scary:

Not sure of her exact age, but the lady was NOT old. She had a persistant
cough before this, which might speak to some pre-existing issues, or maybe
she had been a heaviy smoker (which, by the way, is also likely a high risk group) but she had been working in the office up until Friday. The only indication that she was sick was (apparently) a slightly worse cough than she already had, though I have a feeling she might have been ignoring other symptoms. So many people work through colds, and we definitely have that kind of "roll up your sleeves and get to work" culture at my company. Anyway, they sent her home. They found out that she died at home on Sunday.

So yeah, not old > minimal symptoms > dies two days later > probably infected untold other people in that office. Fucking nuts.

    Stay safe, man!

Yeah, I finally hit my limit with Walmart by my house. It's huge, it's constantly busy, and they cut back to 6 (SIX!) registers in total (really only one or two are ever open), and the rest of it is self checkout.

I was done with that. I'm not getting a discount to scan/bag my own items. I'll
go to my local grocery store, pay about 25% more, and have someone take care of
    it for me.

I mean, that's what I said up until a couple weeks ago when suddenly self-checkout became my best friend because It allows me to completely avoid people. Both of my parents are 85/86, my dad has diabetes (type 1, has had it nearly his whole life), and COVID-19 will likely kill him if he gets it. My wife has a terrible immune system, tons of health problems and likely would wind up hospitalized from COVID-19 at the very least. Yep, we have a culture of "gotta be on site no matter what" that stems from a lot of our people from the bottom to the top having retail backgrounds. When you work with people who take pride in showing up after barely surviving the
a treacherous commute during a snow storm, some "little cold" isn't going to slow them down. I mentioned a death earlier in the week. Even after they more or less mandated we work from home several people on my team were going in, despite the fact that close to if not 100% of our work

Yeah, we have teo chains around here - Safeway and Nob Hill Foods. Safeway's checkstands have a conveyor you need to put your items in, and I've had some of the checkers ask you to take items out of a hand-basket and place them on the conveyor. Some not so nicely.

Then, he or she will continue gossiping with the checker in the aisle next
to you, and if you buy bags, will fill them and leave them at the collection area at the bottom of the conveyor, looking at you blankly while you load
your bags into the cart. If you bring your own bags, they'll let you fill
    them yourself, usually.

Nob Hill has those carts with the front that drops down, so they unload the cart, put the groceries in bags, and put them back in the cart.

    Guess where I go?

This is also Capitalism: No one compelled any of this. No one will be forced

far the guidance I've seen is that the virus is
not airborne; if one stays the appropriate

If they are socializing with others outside their household while doing it,
I agree. I get out and walk, but I still social distance... a lot of folks here walk on the wrong side of the road, so I am even fighting my instincts
(to walk facing traffic) and switching side of the road when I see them
    coming.

I think it is important to still be outside and still get physical
activity, just so long as you stay away from others! I have seen people
not doing that. Louisville, one of the two nearby towns with TV stations,
has closed their park playgrounds and other gathering areas because they
were having issues with people still gathering in groups.

Yesterday (Saturday) the grocery stores were busier then ever. Social
distancing? Hell no. Limit of 50 people in the store? Hell no.
Walmart must have had a thousand people in it. It was cheque weekend
    so they spent spent spent.

Here, the Walmart is open 24 hours (still, I think?) so I can distance if I
am willing to get there early enough. On the other hand, in Kroger's you
can forget it. :( I had run out of some things (trying not to hoard but I need to start buying higher quantities to stay away from there), so I had
to go yesterday morning. Did not go at opening because I know that is a
mad house. Went about 1.5 hours later. Most of the customers were keeping their distance from each other.

I did notice that, as always, the older folks (60+) were not distancing and were touching everything (just like kids on both counts). The workers were
not distancing either. FYI, that store also used to be 24hrs. Sometime
before the outbreak (between November and Christmas) they shortened hours
so that they could "do stocking." They obviously are not using those down hours for that. The shorter hours make it almost impossible to get there
when there are not plenty of people there.

How do I know? I'm (somehow) considered essential as a part time cab
    driver. The world is fucked.

Because people are not distancing, or because you are still driving a cab.
    LOL!

shopping with their kids. WTF? I come home and douse myself with lysol before
I sneak in the back door and immediately strip and shower. F'ing taking their kids shopping. Just trying to stay a couple of feet from people is difficult much less 6-10.

Saw one group where the kids had on masks but the parents didn't (nobody had gloves). What do you bet they all got in the car and the kids immediately
took off their protective gear. I just don't get it.

I also went shopping yesterday and it was the first time I'd actually seen people actively trying to maintain social distancing in a grocery store since this started to get interesting in my area (which was about a month ago now.) Of course, it's pretty much impossible to maintain 6 feet of distance in a grocery store unless its almost entirely empty or almost everyone is exceedingly patient (which, let's face it, no one is.) Awkward as hell!

Three are togo only, three are dine-in and two of those are togo only from
9pm to 7am due to curfew. Here in Georgia it's a mishmash of different laws/rules depending on the locale unfortunately, which basically ends up
doing nothing to stop the spread because our governor is pretty much staying out of it and telling the different cities/counties that it is up to them.

Even with the ones that are dine in we've shut down about half the tables so
as to comply with social distancing but even so, when you have any sort of personal customer service like that, social distancing is impossible. What
are servers going to do, throw the damn food at the table from six feet away? Tell you to get up and move away while she/he brings your drinks?

As much as this should just be common sense of these people, when any
    overnor
comes on the news and says shit like "Go for a jog, walk your dog, go to the
park, etc.," people are going to do it.

Ours does that, but he also stresses the social distancing bit for even when you are outdoors.

    People out at the beach and on most trails are social distancing where I am;
I just read they closed a stairway to one of the beaches since passing is close quarters (but the paths are open)

Grocery stores are still difficult to maintain distance, but they have to be open.

Had to go by Sam's Club this afternoon and there were people in there shopping with their kids. WTF? I come home and douse myself with lysol before I sneak in the back door and immediately strip and shower. F'ing taking their kids shopping. Just trying to stay a couple of feet from people is difficult much less 6-10.

My wife is considered "minimal business operations" at her company, so I've been homeschooling 2 kids. Not bringing the kids to the store has helped me isolate them and myself by not going to the store and making do with what we have more often then not.

Are they still serving dine-in customers? They shut down restaurants
from doing that here right before St. Patrick's day. It is all drive thru, carry out, or delivery only.

Around here, there are a couple of restaurants open for take-out. 6 foot markers abound on the floor, as well as reminders to maintain distance.

I think we're all so happy to have someone else cook that we're on our best behavior. :)

Do you still feel this way? Its been months and counting up to a year now. There is no end in sight. The virus keeps mutating to a new form.

There aren't any. Even with vaccination, we're stuck with COVID for a long time - people forget that swine flu and bird flu never went away; they're just part of the seasonal flu jab now. I predict we're going to have seasonal COVID jabs and occasional flare-ups for years to come.

Sorry to be a downer :(

A new strain seems to call into question the likely effectiveness of the vaccine due to a mutation that may render current vaccine ineffective. Very frustrating :(

    LOL. Who'da Thunkit?

You would think someone, somewhere, very early on that determined this was a flu strain.. would have assumed this would happen. I mean, isn't this the reason we have never been able to contain the flu with a vaccine and tens of thousands of people die from it every year?

Same fucking thing. Different agenda. :|

    Regards,
    Nick
