Hello All,
Shit basically hit the fan at the end of last week here. All K-12
schools are now closed, resorting to some online schoolwork stuff until Apr 6 (4 weeks). My son had his middle school wrestling conference tournament cancelled yesterday. Along with WIAA (Athletics Association) passing down a bunch of stuff so that youth wrestling qualifiers and
state will be postponed until further notice. All his practices are now cancelled until further notice. My daughter's cheer/tumbling gym is
closed until further notice.
My kids are going to be bored AF for the next 4 weeks if the wife and I still have to go to work. For some reason, I have a feeling even if the gov't tells everyone to stay home, I'd still be stuck having to go to
work anyway (construction) unless I didn't want a paycheck.
Things are getting way out of hand. Going out in public is creepier now than the day after 9-11. :(
I live in Portland OR and the state closed all schools and banned all gatherings over 250 people. I learned that this morning Costco is limiting entrance to 250 shoppers at a time, everyone else must line up outside which seems that crowd would be more than 250 people? Counterintuitive? I think this has gotten way out of hand, protect the vulnerable people and leave everything else alone, I say. Thats my two cents anyhow..

The Sun came out here this afternoon so I went for a walk. There was a younger person (not sure if it was a kid or a short adult) walking a dog, about 20-30 yards ahead of me. I never got closer than that but, at some point, the dog stopped, they both looked back at me (they had been off
and on for a couple of blocks) and they both took off running.
With my sense of humor I was half-way tempted to take off after them! :D
That, so far, as been the extent of creepiness.
So what's all going on in everyone's neck of the woods with this virus crap, besides the normal toilet paper and cleaning products of all types being scarce?

Yeah, we stocked up on food and supplies this weekend, hoping not to
have to go to the store for at least a week. We bought 4 rolls of toilet paper, not 128.
Problem is the symptoms of the sickness are really bad and even if
you're not at risk there's a good chance you'll need medical care. And
our medical infrastructure can't handle a huge spike in cases all at
once. We need to drag this out for a while so hospitals can keep up.

Isn't this what Communism is supposed to look like? Why is Capitalism causing shortages of TP and long ass lines just to get in to the store? How is Venezuela faring these days?
American Capitalism is great if you're rich. Rich people aren't
desperate for toilet paper or hand sanitizer. They also have no issues with health insurance, and the government certainly has their back, considering everything they're doing right now is focused on the stock market...which only 20% of Americans can afford to invest in to begin with.
point, the dog stopped, they both looked back at me (they had been off and on for a couple of blocks) and they both took off running.
Were you wearing a clown mask and carrying a machete?
That's really weird....
We've been taking our kids outside, going for walks in
the woods (have to drive a bit, but not too far) and
letting them ride their bikes. Some neighbors were
"sharing a drink" earlier as we biked by: one family
on one side of the street, the other family on the other
side of the street. I thought it was a great idea.
Social distancing doesn't have to imply social isolation.

You guys have really got me worried about TP lol.
I'm really considering grabbing some Korean TP for on the way home! I asked a relative and they told me it should be fine, but to get masks if
I could?

What kind of masks? From everything I've read they do very little to protect you from this. They're more beneficial for someone who is
already sick, if anything.
There are two types of people that drive Lamborghinis. The first will never have a worry in the world about that kind of bullshit, while the other makes foolish financial decisions. Guess which one you'd see at Walgreens desperate to find toilet paper? :P

I think we have to assume schroedinger's corona at this point. We don't know if we have it or not but we have to wear a mask to prevent
spreading it in case we do have it.
I'd still rather be the latter person than be me, just sayin...
I'm nea Memphis, Tn and I never saw Capitalism causing shortages of ANYTHING.
So I do plan to try to get some N95 masks if possible but I'd also enjoy the privilege of wiping my ass as needed too ;)
Of course, there's a stigma about walking around wearing a mask because everyone thinks you're either sick and dumb enough to be walking around
in public, or you're not sick but you're dumb enough to think the mask will help you from getting sick. It's a no win situation! ;)
I think I (well, we... combined income) could... possibly... "afford" an exotic car, just not in any sensible meaning of the word "afford". It's a terrible financial decision until you have so much money that any of the numerous associated downsides no longer matter to you.

It usually doesn't. Idiots panic buying are what causes it. I have a hypothesis that, if you post on FB that something in your area is running out, people will go out and clear the shelves. At least, that is what
has been happening here.

That's exactly what happens. We know this because it's happened before. There's a great story in Exploding the Telephone about a prank certain phone phreaks once conducted which I won't get into, but to understand
the punchline to that story required a detour into a discussion about a joke Johnny Carson once made about a toilet paper shortage. It was just
a joke, obviously, but people believed it and went out and started clearing out the shelves and inadvertantly caused an actual shortage, which Carson copped to on a later show.
Plus I'm sick as hell right now anyway :(
Yeah, likely. Lol. I already have a '67 GTO with a brand new LS motor
and T56 trans. I probably dumped close to $50k into the build itself

This has nothing to do with Capitalism versus Communism. People are engaged in panic buying and demand is outstripping supply (for now). The difference between Capitalism and Communism is that suppliers will
happily start producing more to meet demand, whereas in Venezuela you're going to have to suck dick to get TP.

Stores are beginning to ration how much of an item people can buy. This is happening in a capitalistic society. This cannot be denied.
That sounds like the image of communism/socialism that I've been told about.
I had to run to the grocery store on Saturday. The paper good racks were barren. Entire sections of certain items were just empty. What should have been the busiest time of day for the store, felt more like about 11pm, there was hardly anyone there.
Nope (well, not as far as I know, but they worked in a different building nowhere near mine) but it certainly brings our management's call to not let everyone who was able to work from home when our governor first suggested we do WEEKS ago into an even harsher light. Blood may well be on their hands now.
wow. That sucks. Scares the hell out of me. I am working trying to keep six restaurants open and folks working so every time I get home I basically bathe all my belongings in Lysol and hop in the shower before
I even talk to anyone.

Midwesterners, people on the east coast and islanders are used to it -- it's hurricane/tornado shopping.
This is not a small store, either. They are about the size of your usual wallmart, minus the auto area. It is Kroger, if you are familiar with those.

You've been to venezuala? How did you get your TP? YOu talk authoritively about it like you have first hand knowledge.
I work for a government agency. Our governor is trying to paint a
picture of everything in our offices being fine, but most of us are not allowed to WFH, even during this (I am lucky they are finally letting
us).
Meanwhile, we have people who come to work sick all the time. As they
are contract employees, I wish their managers would send them home but they don't. One of them was telling me that he thinks he already had COVID 19 so he sees no reason to WFH now. I would like to thank him for coming in while feeling so bad. :(
Again, that would not be happening if the dumbasses were not hoarding everything. The f-tards have started hoarding perishables here.
I mean, that's what I said up until a couple weeks ago when suddenly self-checkout became my best friend because It allows me to completely avoid people. Both of my parents are 85/86, my dad has diabetes (type
1, has had it nearly his whole life), and COVID-19 will likely kill him
if he gets it. My wife has a terrible immune system, tons of health problems and likely would wind up hospitalized from COVID-19 at the very least. I'm following all the precautions I can, because I don't want to
be the vector to spread it to my family.
Here, they're hoarding the canned/dried goods, but you can still get
milk, vegetables, fruits, and so on.
Yikes. Please, use gloves when touching these devices, the touch
screens, the credit card machines, etc., because the virus can live on this for a while.
You must never have gone shopping on black friday.I have not .
You must never have attended a music festival where people get hospitalized when they run out of bottled water and start charging
$15-20 per bottle for what they're able to scrounge. #capitalism!

Even after they more or less mandated we work from home several people on my team were going in, despite the fact that close to if not 100% of our work can be done remotely (depending on the particular person.) *sigh*

Make sure you use the right kind. The thicker your glove, the less
likely the touchscreen will function. Capacitive touch screens really suck. Makes me wish we'd never given up on using infrared-based touchscreens, even if it meant having a device with a visible edge to it.

I have seen a lot of folks say we are worse off for capitalism, but I
have seen very few (actually none I know of) that have moved off to Cuba or Venezuela or North Korea (or Russia or East Germany, when that
applied to them). They just want to stay here and complain. I am guessing they would miss the free speach too much if they moved.
This. It's always people who just want to whine and complain because they're temporarily inconvenienced, or because they're disingenuous and want to control other peoples' lives, or they just want to look holier than thou. It's all so tiresome.

I see a good number of people doing this, but so
far the guidance I've seen is that the virus is
not airborne; if one stays the appropriate
distance away from others while outdoors, why is
that a problem? Naturally, if multiple family
units are congregating in public spaces that's
messed up, but if it's just a family going for
a walk or something and they're not near anyone
else....

...........yeah, cuz that makes sense.
That was the exact issue we were having in my city. One group of friends or a family goes to a park, who cares? Agreed. A few people? No problem. Next thing you know the park is full of people and even if they're attempting to maintain appropriate distances, they're going to be using the same bathrooms, touching the same door knobs, gates, handrails, whatever. Even the hiking trails in my area got flooded with people because they all thought they'd be the only ones to come up with the
idea to go out to a normally semi-secluded scenic overlook or waterfall
or whatever. The governor finally decided to put an actual order in last week because people simply weren't using good judgment.

There aren't any. Even with vaccination, we're stuck with COVID for a
long time - people forget that swine flu and bird flu never went away; they're just part of the seasonal flu jab now. I predict we're going to have seasonal COVID jabs and occasional flare-ups for years to come.
A new strain seems to call into question the likely effectiveness of
the vaccine due to a mutation that may render current vaccine
ineffective. Very frustrating :(
