• Maple sap time

From Michael Deig@9:91/20 to All on Sat Jan 28 14:08:00 2017
Well the maple sap is trying to run here in southern indiana. Hope to
be able to have our first time ever of maple syrup. We tapped walnuts
this past fall and that turned out to be some of the best syrup that I
    have ever had.

Sounds good, I've never made any kind of maple syrup. I remember watching episode 7 of season 2 of Building Wild where they built a killer Log cabin
for a group of bikers. It was very interesting to watch the building process take shape.. and I learned some things about making maple syrup also. link.. channel.nationalgeographic.com/building-wild/videos/maple-syrup-motor-club-time lapse/

yea we did nit think that as far south that we are in indiana that we
could. Found out that there was some doing it close so we pulled the
trigger. takes over 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup. So a
lot of boiling. Like watching a camp fire.

I am from northern indiana and as I remember, in this area sap begins to
run in late feb or early march. Is there that much difference between the
the north and southern parts of Indiana? Or is that unusual for that time of year where you are at?

We can start a little earlier as the weather get warmer just a little
bit sooner. But you are right that it is from Feb to early march for the
sap runs. I watch some web sites where people from this area talk about
making maple syrup and they all tap around this time so I figured that I
better get a few in and see how it goes.

I have some more taps I can put in later in the month if I tapped to
earlier and the holes start to heal up so that I do not miss the runs.
That is why I only started with a few this year.

Well best of luck to you with your run - we buy syrup from a local guy who
says that he taps about 2,000 trees each year - this past year was the first year that he sold out - I am afraid that he might close shop - The real stuff is very good.
