• Mental Illness in the Intelligence Community

Having mental illness and being involved in the IC can be a bad mix.
Sometimes people with mental illness will hurt their family and friends while not realizing the things they are doing put secrets at risk. It is best to move a person who was formerly in TS work to something in logistics, data processing, and other lower level forms of IC work. They don't intend to
hurt the IC in most instances but can do stuff that they regret because they are "out of their minds." It is very important to not put an operative out
in the cold as that can result in hard feelings, and a person with hard feelings can be even more dangerous than the opposition. Some of the worst outcomes would be when intelligece-related employees are fired and face persecution as a result of their mental illness. Their role should change, to protect secrets, but they absolutely should not be left out in the cold as someone who hates an agency can do far more damage than even the opposition
who dislikes your side. This is a Western perspective. Some intelligence agencies/organizations from different cultures would kill or fire people
with problems and it seems to work for them, however, and agency who really cares about their people will have more good-will to their cause.
