Taggants are a chemical or biological item that can help identify a location
or person. The first type would be contained in a gas can and poured around the area of a target. The taggant would then be activated remotely and the seemingly innert substance would light up and be able to guide an air force to target an enemy. The activation can be by chemical means among others. The better understood tagging of people involves spraying someone with a
substance that can be detected in only trace quantities, with
detection machines in airports (plausibly), keeping people monitored or identified. The chemical taggants are easily understood, however there are also biological taggants, which basically live for the whole purpose of synthesizing that chemical agent. Biologicals can be "programmed"
genetically to only reproduce a certain number of times and then become inferile. So the biologicals don't reproduce indefinitely. This is a very good feature, otherwise the biological/chemical tag would massively spread
its chemical and make it no longer effective due to widespread dispersion.
